Its between the ring and middle finger on the back of my hand and down my wrist below the thumb. The strength in it is going and now I have trouble gripping things like a bannister.

It is job related but I cannot give up or change what I do. Are there any exercises I could do or does anyone have any suggestions? My doc has given me calcium tablets to take.

to find out your blood group the cheap way, go to a donor session to give blood. Otherwise your GP can do it but will likely charge you for it (~£25).

The book to help with the diet is Eat Right 4 Your Type by Peter D'Adamo, ND. His anthropology is a bit ropey but the diets can help - I follow it too and have virtually removed all trace of digestive problems (IBS, acid reflux) that I used to have. this is the website - the book is easily found on amazon or in book shops.

IMO, as a music teacher knowledgeable about the damage to hands and wrists that can be caused by burning through the pain, this is pretty serious. I think you need to see a hand specialist, and your GP can give you a referral.

Thanks for the info thumbwitch. I will look in to the donating blood. I have thought about doing it in the past so this will benefit me too.

Agedknees - ah, my sympathies. and BoffnMum - General advice seems to be go back to my docs and get them to refer me and thats what I shall do. I have time off work next week so will be able to go to the next available appointment. I will book the other doc this time and try to make sure I come out with a referral.

I will do a follow up and let you know how I get on with everything.
Thank you all for so much helpful information and advice. Its been good to find theres so much more I can do!

size 6 feet it's nice to hear from someone with an open mind!! You should have yr. blood type on yr. ante natal card if not big chemists sell kits.
The book is written by Dr. Peter D'Adamo and there is a website. The most amazing thing is once you know your blood type the books give you lists of which foods to avoid and which are neutral and beneficial and you already know; like tomatoes have always given me eczema and i noticed it before the book said for Atypes to avoid. They're good for O types though!!
