Our nursery warned that one of the kids had lice and we should watch out for it... Sadly my dd got them too. I have tried 3 different shampoo's and she still has them... Today I will have to take her to chop off all her beautiful long locks and am soooo sad about it. Is there any home remedies out there I should try?

Yup - a little further down listmaker. Nitty gritty is the business.

Surfermum · 12/07/2005 12:25

Another vote for the Nitty Gritty comb here! And I'd also say there is no need at all to get her hair cut. It makes no difference. I catch them from dsd and I have really short hair. I'd also agree that combing out with loads of conditioner every day initially (if there's loads) and then every 3 days is extremely effective. When I've done it 2 or 3 times and got none out then I stop.

Lonelymum · 12/07/2005 12:32

Spooky Listmaker. My mum only showed me the article, didn't actually give it to me, because she was going to pass it on to my sister. Quick! Reassure me you are not my sister! Give me a brief detail about yourself which will prove you are not!

clary · 12/07/2005 12:36

yes Aero, totally agree with you.
Combing out regularly with conditioner is the way to go.
Also chemical free which has to be better.

Listmaker · 12/07/2005 13:05

Don't panic Lonelymum - I don't have a sister! I do live quite near you in Bristol though - remember offering some places to go tips to you a few weeks ago!!!

Nickinha · 12/07/2005 16:05

thank you all for you good advice which will surely be tested tonight. Also, I have decided that i will NOT be cutting off her locks tonight just be treating and checking regularly.. Thanx again

Thoroughly recommend this - the bug busting programme:
bug busting kit

PeachyClair · 12/07/2005 16:46

I just do the combing bit, then every other night I leave tea tree conditioner (a quid in Asda, nothing fancy) on the hair. I bet the tea tree content is minimal but something must be in it as it worked! maybe it just tastes nasty to the lice?

Agree with Aero, other mums don't always bother so you have to keep it up. we keep ds's hair short now, which ds1 hates as he loved his curly blond locks. Can't be helped though.

CountessDracula · 12/07/2005 16:58

My pharmacist told me there is a new preventative product but they had none in stock will trya nd find out what it is

janeite · 12/07/2005 17:38

Wow Lonelymum - MY mum cut that article out for me too! The active ingredient is coconut oil apparently and the product costs £12.49 a bottle - available from Boots and a few other places but can't remember where else.

Lonelymum · 12/07/2005 17:43

Would be interested to know if Lice Attack works so perhaps if anyone tries it, they could post about it.

Listmaker, that's OK then! My sister lives in London! Might be after some more tips of things to do round Bristol soon, unless I can find the old thread.

PeachyClair · 12/07/2005 17:47

Lonelymum, trey the kite festival in September - www.kite-festival.org/

Used to live in Bruidgwater, now in newport, so you're sort of halfway between my stomping grounds!

Lonelymum · 12/07/2005 17:48

Good idea, but also need inspiration for August! Dh works in Cwmbran which I believe is near you.

Doddle · 12/07/2005 18:01

Lice Attack is fantastic, it's foaming coconut oil stuff, I have never seen so many of the tiny baby lice come out with anything else. We swear by it!!!

Tortington · 12/07/2005 18:37

conditioner and nit comb nightly for weeks - for everyone in the house. every one will cry and moan and hate your guts.

but honestly its the only way. the stinky stuff from the doctors is good - i personally think full marks mousse is rubbish - pants.
but after the stinky stuff from the doctors poisons the crawlies then you need to do the nit comb nightly with conditioner then a week later the stinky stuff again.

Eaney · 12/07/2005 18:39

3 years ago I was told there were nits in ds's nursery. The nursery nurse suggested putting 10drops of tea tree in 100mls of oil and coat his hair every day. Well for the last three years we have done this and he is yet to get nits.

He has been exposed to numerous outbreaks over the years so perhaps it does work. I'm afraid to stop now just in case it is the reason he is nitfree.

Eve · 12/07/2005 19:00

Haven't read the thread so sorry if this has already been recommended.

Nitty Gritty comb is really good, recomended by a teacher friend who has vast experience of them all.

I'll try and find a link to their website.

Also I read an article that said its easier to get nits with short hair rather than long, as the nits have less hair to climb across when they transfer from one person to another, apparently they can only be away from scalp for 30 secs or so.
Therefore long hair is best.

PeachyClair · 12/07/2005 19:42

Lonelymum- lol- dh works in Cribbs causeway which I believe is near you!

Lonelymum · 12/07/2005 19:52

Lol! They must pass each other on the bridge!

PeachyClair · 12/07/2005 20:00

Nah, dh works night, they could probably lift share!!!

Aero · 12/07/2005 21:43

Done it already Eve - 10:46:59am post. It truly is a brilliant comb and doesn't pull the hair because of it's clever design.

rodeo1 · 12/07/2005 22:31

Was just about to start a new thread on this - how brill!

Found 2 adult lice on dd 2 weeks ago treated with full marks and combed through for an hour.

To my horror, found 5 more 2 days ago, thought she'd caught them again, so treated again with full marks.

This evening found 2 babie lice , little buggers must have slippped through the net 2 days ago. Also think now that she hasn't caught them again but that I missed some 2 weeks ago which progressed into adults.

I think the full marks killed most but not all. I'll invest in one of 'the biz' combs I think. Also intrigued by the petrol method, I'm 6 months pg and love the smell of petrol, though I'd probably try to do it in the smallest most unventilated room to get the full effect

Aero · 12/07/2005 22:52

pmsl rodeo at getting the full effect!.
That's exactly what I now know happened with dd regarding finding more after full marks treatment, hence my expertise and now total vigilence! Little blighters don't stand a chance now!

rodeo1 · 12/07/2005 22:55

Right just ordered the nitty gritty comb off their website, should arrive on Thurs. I rinsed dd's hair with few drops of tea tree oil tonight too, and I'm tying it back for school. Oh well only 2 more weeks to go til they break up!

MarsLady · 12/07/2005 22:56

Aero, my chocolatey cousin, the fount of all wisdom with crawlie blighters. ROFL I'll send you my kids, see how you feel about conditioner then.

Incidentally I'm a believer in the conditioner method, though I will be giving Lice Attack a try cos I was impressed with the article. Clearly have nothing better to spend my cash on (except some rather lovely bits from the Boden sale. Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!)
