Would you take co-codamol that hasn't been prescribed to you?

They are 30mg if that makes any difference?

Are they the pink ones? Dh gets strong painkillers for back pain, he has big pink ones and tiny white ones. I take them all the time for dental pain and migranes. I like the pink ones best, the little white ones make me sleepy.

weegiemum · 12/02/2010 15:09

Depends what for. I would if it was a migraine. They will make you sleepy if you're not used to that much coedine.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2010 15:10

They are white and 'tablet' shaped iyswim not round.

I'm having dental work done at the moment and have false crowns in two of my teeth. I've got the most godawful pain and I know paracetemol won't help.

It's the sleepy thing that worries me as I'm here alone with the Dc.

don't take it

co-codamol makes me so very sleepy, guaranteed to be asleep and unrousable within about 30 mins of taking it, not worth the risk if you're there alone with little ones

hope you're feeling better soon

weegiemum · 12/02/2010 15:14

If its dental pain, you might be better taking a large dose or ibuprofen if you have any. You can take up to 600mg at a time (more than it says on the packet) as long as you don't take more than 2.4 grams a day. It will take down any swelling as well as helping the pain.

Or with the co-codamol you could take one of them and one ordinary paracetamol so you get a bigger than normal dose of coedine but not the whole 60mg.

You can take ibuprofen and co-codamol at the same time.

Hope it feels better soon - toothache is nasty!

EccentricaGallumbits · 12/02/2010 15:16

I would. The codeine can make you woozy and constipated and don't take them regularly for very long.
What abou one co-codamol and one paracetamol - thereby getting 30 mg of codeine (which is a bloody good painkiller) but not getting too sleepy.

Alternate with ibuprofen so you get full pain coverage in between.

wildstrawberryplace · 12/02/2010 15:17

In short, yes. If I was in that much pain.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2010 15:17

It's probably not worth the risk. Thanks for the advice.

I might nip down to boots for some of that gel you use for toothache. I haven't tried it before but heard good things about it.

I've already tried a dubious looking tube of Bonjela ...my youngest stopped teething 2 years ago hehe and yuck.

ah. yes weegie. you sid it first. slow typing

cheesypopfan · 12/02/2010 15:30

the 30mg tabs are quite potent, but you can buy co-codamol at 8mg strength from your pharmacist. less likely to cause wooziness but quite an effective pain reliever.

TrillianAstra · 12/02/2010 15:38

Not that much if alone with young children. You can buy co-codamol over the counter but it's only about 6mg.

I secnd what weegie says about ibuprofen - you can take more than it says. You can also take a ful dose of ibuprofen AND a full dose of paracetamol at the same time.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2010 15:44

Ah I can't take Ibuprofen anymore - it gives me ahem bowel trouble.

maybe I'll break one in half and take that? DS is having a meltdown so I can't face trecking out.

OP posts:
cheesypopfan · 12/02/2010 15:48

breaking one in half will give you 15mgs codeine, which is eqv (almost) to taking two co-codamol 8/500, which is the lower dose available, and you should be fine with that. However, as you would only get 250mgs paracetamol, I would suggest taking another 500mg paracetamol tablet just to give yourself the best dose of that too. Hope it works !

lifeistooshort · 12/02/2010 15:51

I wouldn't considering I was prescribed some last week and it send me straight to sleep (within an hour of taking it) for about 2 hours and I found it very difficult to wake up and was quite confused. I stopped taking it. You don't know how you might react so if you did decide to take it,make sure there is someone in the house and that you told them you took some

TrillianAstra · 12/02/2010 16:35

10% of people don't have the gene that turns codeine into morphine, so codeine has no effect on them whatsoever.

One of my friends had codeine for tooth pain and it gave her hallucinations.

EccentricaGallumbits · 12/02/2010 16:50

makes me itch madly. as does morphine and tramadol. which is a bugger.

sweetkitty · 12/02/2010 16:53

I take one cocodamol and one paracetamol at a time for SPD pain, cannot cope with two cocodamol here alone with the DC, they make me all spaced out and sicky.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2010 19:11

I've resorted to dabbing calpol on the hurty tooth - and it's working.

I'll have to be careful to not overdose hehe

OP posts:
YoMoJo · 12/02/2010 21:11

Im guessing it's sugar-free calpol

If you have had it before, take the cocodamol tonight when you go to bed so you get a good nights sleep (providing you dont need to get up in the night to see to any DC)

My SIL had some left over from when she had radiotherapy that we did use (I had migraines DH toothache) but only at night as others have said it does make you very drowsy.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2010 21:35

I shan't bother - 've had a glass of wine now - for medicinal purposes haha.

Really not worth the risk.

These are my mums she left a pack here months ago and I know instantly when I talk to her on the phone and she's taken them. She goes a little loopy.
