coil question for anyone that fits them...

Had a coil fitted a month ago now,

I want it OUT

I know the side effects will settle, but I have had a headache on & off for a month now, twice it has developed into a migriane. (I had to get my neighbour to babysit my baby & 2yr old as I was incapable) I am uptight & stressy with my 2 yr old, he does the slightest thing & i yell. Which is soooo not like me I am so chilled & usually much more patient. I dont like being like this. I am also finding it hard to sleep.

There is no reason why I couldnt go back on the pill, I had no side effects when i was on Yasmin. I just wanted to rule out any risk of "human error" But I really wish I had gone back on the pill now.

So I just wanted to know if I went to my GP would she take the coil out for me so soon or will she want me to give it longer for symptoms to settle down?

hi i work in a hospital and usually run the gynae clinic i think a month is definately long enough for you and your gp to know that its not working for you and its a good thing there are other forms of contraception available your gp should be able to go through these with you. Before you set off ask your receptionalist at the practice to put you through to the practice nurse chances are she might be the one who inserts them at your practice good luck you will be fine remember coils are not for everyone

I'm assuming it's the coil with hormone in it (Mirena)? The hormone side effects (if you are unlucky enough to get them) are particularly strong in the first 2 months while the coil is shrinking the lining of your womb. So as time goes on your body absorbs less and less hormone and should hopefully be fine at month three.

So I would guess that your GP will tell you this and ask if you could bear to hang on till the end of month 3 since you've gone through the trauma of having a coil fitted it would be such a shame to go back to square one cos if you can cope with the coil that's you sorted for up to five years.

And yes - this won't be human error - a known side effect that occasionally occurs.

HTH

Thanks so much for replying,

I was going to give it 3 months but think I have made my mind up to have it out sooner now. I just wasnt sure if things would get easier or not.

It is the normal copper coil one. My GP fits the coils, with the practice nurses assistance.

I bled quite a bit in the days after it was fitted, then I had a week with no bleeding followed by my period the next week, it only just started tailing off 2 days ago (day 12!!!!), but have now had fresh bleeding today - dont know if it is a coincidence but walked quite a bit today. Not sure if this is normal or not? I was expecting longer, heavier periods.

Will see GP Tuesday as busy Monday but will try & get a phone consultation with her tomorrow.

YoMoJo, would be really interested to hear how you get on.

I have a copper coil too, fitted in Jan. I've had about 5 days where I didn't bleed, a 13 day period where I thought I was dying and lots of other weird stuff that I know the GP would argue is nowt to do with the coil as it isn't hormonal.

Reading your OP though has made me think. I've had headaches on and off since it was fitted (assumed anaemia as I'm always borderline anyway and have bled and bled and bled) but have also had 3 migraines since it was fitted and usually I have 1 every 6-8 months or so. Am cross, teary, crampy and oddly, my hips ache. I'm thinking about taking it out myself. I just don't feel right at all.

Showofhands - yes to all the above too have got an appointment to have it out Thursday. I googled cooper toxicity/sensitivity and most of the problems I have been having are listed.

I had this exact problem with my copper coil and ended up so frustrated that I pulled the damn thing out myself. I do not think that they give enough credence to copper sensitivity, I definitely suffered from it.

I think I might have a word with the GP. I know he'll want me to wait and see but I'm ovulating today while still bleeding heavily as part of my period. I get quite bad ovulation pains so I'm having period cramps, ovulation cramps, am bleeding still and have just read that copper toxicity commonly causes sciatica flare ups. I was moaning to dh this morning that I'm having a sciatica flare up for no reason at all (normally get it if I sleep somewhere different or change my workout routine). I'm also suffering from insomnia which is another key copper toxicity thing along with the bloody headaches.

Of course it could be a coincidence, but it's very peculiar. Brilliant contraceptive though. Even if I stopped bleeding long enough to have sex, I'm so hormonal I'd probably either throttle dh or cry all over him mid-proceedings.

I turned down the Mirena because of its side effects. Oh the exquisite irony.

Back to condoms I think.

I too have a copper coil fitted which I have had for approximately 5/6 months after I found the mirena coil a nightmare. I put on 3 stone which I now cannot shift, my mood swings are horrendous and as I already suffer from depression this is made even worse, and to top things off I get really terrible headaches that just won't go.

I thought all these things were down to the mirena but they have persitted since changing it for the copper coil. I also have absolutely no sex drive and on the odd occassion when I do have sex I get pains for 2/3 days afterwards.

Has anybody else experienced this or am I just going insane?
