Wondering if anybody else has experienced this problem. A very good friend of mine is vv worried and upset as her dd (6 weeks old) is being refferred to a specialist as she has a large head circumfrance for her age. (40.5cm - this is on the 99th centile) It has grown 6cm in 3 weeks. The HV said it can sometimes be a sign of water on the brain, we've not heard of this but she is ovbiously very concerned and can't help but think the worst. Please can anyone help to put her mind at rest. The baby is fine in every other way, she sleeps and feeds well etc.

Having a large head circumference is not necessarily a sign of anything sinister happening. They will for example check the hc in relation to weight and length, she may be generally a large baby.

Water on the brain is also known as hydrocephalus. My daughter was diagnosed with it at about 8 weeks old, although now it is arrested (she's 11). It occurs when the fluid in the spaces of the brain known as the ventricles, is unable to drain away properly, causing a build up of fluid and pressure on the brain. This in turn causes the head to become larger than average. Because the skull is such an inflexible thing,it can only take a limited amount of pressure and fluid without causing problems for the brain, so a lot of people with hydrocephalus are shunted. This involves placing a drainage tube into the ventricles to enable the fluid to drain away into the stomach. BUT not everyone needs this, my daughter didn't. Children do have some form of developmental delay on the whole, but nothing is definite. One symptom that could possibly be a sign of hydrocephalus are the eyes. If you look at them and can see the whites of the eye above the iris (like a sunset), then this can also be a sign. It's because the pressure is causing the eyes to move out of their usual position.

A good place to look at would be Asbah , who are a very good support group and charity for people with hydrocephalus and spina bifida. They were very good when I needed to call on them, even sent someone round to talk to me.

Fwiw my daughter is very happy and thriving. You would not be able to pick her out from any other child. She did have a big head when younger and was developmentally delayed for a while but not anymore, so it isn't all bad news.

Hope this info is useful. Please try not to worry, although I understand how hard it must be. Best wishes to your friend.

Had similar problem with ds2, his head circumference went off the graph at 7/8 months and we were refered to a paediatric neurologist, he was given a ultrasound through his fontanelle to check for extra fluid, which was clear, then a follow up on about 6 months later as his head continue to grow.He also had a urine test for some chemical imbalance which could indicate some very rare syndrome(sorry can't remember name), this was clear to. He's just had a CT scan which was normal and as he is developong normally, the doctors is happy that he's just got a large head. Hope this reassures your friend. Although we've had a worrisome 9 months, I'm glad I know that it was thoroughly investigated. Do you know who has been measuring the babies head as in my experience the measurement varies widely depending on who is doing it and my HV had great problems trying to understand the centile charts! It helps if the same person is monitering the child. Hope this all helps, best wishes to your friend.

Thank you to both of you for taking the time to respond. I am hoping everything will be OK.

There is a thread in the archives called 'odd shaped head' or something like that which you may find interesting to read.

My DS was born with a large head because his fontanelles were fused; he was operated on at 6 months to correct this. There is a very good website at www.headlines which has lots of information.

Good luck, at least your friends' health carers are monitoring the situation.

My ds had head circumference on the 101st centile. Also referred to consultants. Not helped by the fact that he was incorrectly measured twice. Final diagnosis - "familial macrocephaly" - posh words for big heads run in the family
