Fibroid in the Lower abdomin + Polyp in the womb

Hi all

5 years ago (approx) I had a ultrasound scan and a fibroid was found in my lower pelvis area, I am 48 years of age, I went through the menapause 12 years ago and have been on HRT now for 12 years
I am now being weened of it.

Unfortunatly this is causing problems, I was on a patch {fematrix 40} for a number off years and my new doctor she said this is to high a dose to be using and has now put me on a combination tablet Kliofem, which is lower than the I was on previosly on a the fematrix patch which had 1.25mg of estradiol in it, I took tablets to make me come on/blled every three months.

Today I had a ultrasound because since the change of HRT I keep having heavy bleeds and do not bleed, but have now had four heavy bleeds in 2 months of taking the new HRT.
She wanted to see why this was happening, the ultrasound showed

  1. The fibroid is still present (not sue yet if it may be bigger)

  2. I have a Polyp in my womb

There was a mention of the number 43 (think this may be the size of either the fibroid or the polyp)
will know more when I see the doctor again.
I ache down below, like a dim period ache, sometimes there is pains, sharp ones,
I have lower back pain, feel tired, nauseas from time to time.

The stanographer said that polyps make you bleed and this could be the culprit.

Is any body having or had the same expereince/s?
I am unsure what is going to happen.....

I suppose the polyp will have to be removed!!
I also see after googling it, they call polyps TUMORS........

Any comments appreciated, please?

cheers and thanks for listening

Annie

Hi Annie

Didn't want your post to go unanswered. I have no personal experience but i am a sonographer if that counts! The vast vast majority of polyps are benign (not cancerous) and absolutely nothing to worry about- google has a habit of caling such things 'tumours' and making them sound much worse thsn they are.

Polyps can cause irregular bleeding however, so often they are removed to try and treat the symptoms - as far as I am aware this is a very straightforward- day case type procedure.

Fibroids are also very common and over the age of 40 at least 50% of women will have at least one. They are completely harmless, may or may not cause heavy periods- depends on size and position of them.

The other cause for your symptoms may be good old fashioned 'hormones'- ie change of HRT- it may be taking a while for your body to adjust to this.

I'm not sure if it is your GP or a gynaecologist who has sent you for the scan but I would imagine if it GP then they may refer you to see gynae or if it is gynae you have been referred by then they would prob do one of two things- conservative- 'wait & see approach- polyp has prob been there for ages- if bleeding probs settle once you have adjusted to HRT then there may be no need to do anything or perhaps suggest removal of polyp and see if that helps? Third option could be adjustment to HRT??

These are all just options that I can think of as I am typing- am not a dr but have a lot of experience working in gynae clinic!

Either way- please try not to worry x
HTH

Hi Annie....i have got 3 fibroids all about the size of a golf ball and have been through the menopause. They started 10-15 years ago and i noticed that my tummy was more swollen than it should be.

Apparently there are 2 types of fibroid, thos that are inside the uterus and those that are embedded in the uterine wall. Im sure elizabethsmum will confirm this.

My gynaecologist said it was not as safe to remove them as they were embedded in my uterine wall.( could cause alot of bleeding) As i was past my childbearing years he said it would be better to have a hysterectomy. However ,he said they may shrink once i was thro the menopause and not producing so much oestrogen and progesterone.

Your pills and patches will have helped them to carry on growing,so if you could mangage without HRT they may shrink. Do you know if yours are embedded or inside the womb.
