Perforation of the uterus when having a coil inserted?

I think I'm going to have to get a copper coil inserted - due to lack of other options as I want to avoid hormones - and I've just read up about the side affects/pros, cons etc.

One mentioned is potential perforation of the cervix. This sounds horrendous and it's making me go off the idea.

Has anyone had this happen? What would happen if it did perforate - i'd imagine emergency surgery but what would happen afterwards? Would it make your cervix not strong enough to support a pregnancy?

Does anyone have any knowledge of this? Alternatively, feel free to give me a virtual slap and tell me to stop being such a drama queen

I have a coil. Perforation of the cervix is very rare. It usually happens when the doctor isn't very clued up about what they're doing. I don't know what the percentage risk is, but very low - probably about the same as getting a blood clot from being on the pill. I have a very awkward cervix and she got mine in fine. I don't know what would happen if they did perforate it, tbh, but make sure you get a doctor who's had a lot of practice and it is unlikely to happen.

I don't know about perforation of the uterus from coil insertion per se, but I am involved in a treatment that has a risk of perforating the uterus. It doesn't hurt, and doesn't require emergency surgery. They just give you antibiotics if they realise that it has happened

Thanks both. Thats exactly the kind of info I was looking for Brahms, about the chance of it happening being similar to the blood clot risk while on the pill.

And thanks CMOT, I didn't realise anti-bs would be the treatment if it happened.

I can get rather drama-queen-esque sometimes... thank you

I think I'm going to go for it... just need to find out where does it first and make an appointment...

Do a search on coil or Mirena, because there's a poster on here whose coil perforated her uterus just about a fortnight ago or so. She has to have surgery.

Thanks expat, Ive just found the thread you mean. There seem to be quite a few horror stories related to the coil, I can feel myself changing my mind.

Can't stomach the idea of things like it going for a wander, puncturing things, being vvv painful to get in (I have no DCs yet)...

Bloody contraception.

Sod it. Might as well just go back on the pill...

Nooo! Don't be put off. I haven't given birth yet either and it wasn't that bad, just take some painkillers an hour before. It's not going to go anywhere. I think they are more likely to fall out or whatever if you've already had kids, as your uterus is stretched a bit. Mine's amazing (well, I'm not pg yet) . There are horror stories about everything.
