Chronic knee problems

I have an unstable knee joint, which has dislocated 3 times over last 20 years.

The whole thing is basically knackered, torn ligaments and a crack in my patella. Every few years I visit the GP and go through the Xray & physiotherapy cycle, asking for surgery all the time, but consultants have told me they are reluctant to operate as it would lead to further complications.

It impacts on my general health, as every step is painful, so keeping fit is a real challenge. I have to pace myself so carefully as if I overdo it my knee swells and becomes unstable, however if I am underactive I gain weight and compound the problem.

I would love to speak to anyone who has paid privately for an operation? I often think of saving up for one, but have no idea if it's within my means, or if it really does cause further complication.

I am just so tired of having to walk gingerly everywhere, not being able to run, dance, and avoiding trips up and down the stairs!

If you have an unstable knee joint are you hypermobile? If so, that is prob why they won't operate. Hypermobiles don't respond well to surgery.

Patients often think that surgery is the only answer, and that it will end all their problems, but it's never a guarentee.

Do you know what surgery you want?? There are loads of different knee operations.

Can you ask for a second opinion from another consultant? A private appt with a consultant is about £100.

BTW I'm a specialist physio in lower limb and also have an interest in hypermobility.

I also have dodgy knees... I dont have an official diagnosis.. I had micro fracture surgery last year but it has made absolutely NO difference .. and I ended up with a dvt for my troubles ! I am now seeking a second opinion privately ..had my first visit yesterdaya nd am to have another MRI in the next couple of weeks...

I can sooo sympathise with your frustrations - not being able to dance or even bounce on the trampoline with the kids...its so frustrating and demoralising .. whereabouts do you live ?
