Dodgy 'cells' found after hemorrhoidectomy

Doc said that it's grade 2. No specific protocol to follow and will just keep an eye on it for now. Anyone have any experience of this? Does it even have a name?

bump?

No idea - so they found dodgy cells on the haems themselves? not inside the bowel?
How will they "keep an eye"?

NeedCoffee · 09/02/2010 22:59

yes actually inside it after they took it off. They want me to go back in 6 months, may need to have biopsys, but assuming he'll just have a look. Obv not urgent cos of the 6 month wait but still need to have more imformation on the matter.

I am not a nurse or anything by the way, but at least it sounds like it was localised to the haems.
Fingers x'd and hopefully someone will come along today who knows something X

Thanks QOD.
Bump for anyone who has any experience?

Gosh, poor you.

BelaLugosiNoir · 10/02/2010 22:09

They said 'grade 2' but not what? Its a bit odd - the 6 month check up is a pretty good sign.

I just googled (I know, I know) and haemorrhoids are classified by grades according to the degree of prolapse and the terms used there are I-IV.
Can you remember if the doc said anything else about the type of cell (I am not a doc, work in pathology).
They should write to you and copy your GP with a management letter (confirming what was said at this appt and your future management) so give it a week or so and see if you can get an appt with the GP to discuss it.

He said cells similar to cervical 'dodgy cells' but they don't know what to do about it, and I may need a colospocy(sp) even though my last smear was clear and it was within the last 2 years, guess I'll have to wait and see what happens. I tried googling but don't have a name for it so couldn't really find anything.

They don't know what to do about it?

Sorry, that sounds like they are a bit hopeless tbh!

I imagine they are talking about pre-cancerous cells, which have the propensity to turn into cancerous ones but have not yet done so.

If they have removed the haemorrhoid(s) containing these then that's great - you may need no further treatment.

However if there is a question mark over whether there was a clear boundary between these and the areas left behind, you will want them to act sooner rather than later, and yes, take biopsy of areas concerned and test them too.

I'm not sure what the various degrees of seriousness are with regard to bowel cancer (or the potential for it) but you don't want to be worrying.

Please ask to speak to your consultant or the surgeon who took them out...you need reassurance and a plan...this is not good enough.

Flightattendant · 11/02/2010 14:08

Btw this will have nothing to do with your cervix or the smear tests you have had. This is him comparing the dodgy cells they found in your bowel to the type of dodgy cells one can sometimes have from a smear, iyswim...I think he means they are NOT cancer cells but they are a bit 'atypical' ie not as they should be, which means they could have become cancerous if they had been left there.

Does that make sense?

Flightattendant · 11/02/2010 14:12

Could have been an adenoma or a polyp...these are sometimes pre cancerous.

I would think a colonoscopy is a very good idea to rule out any further issues that could require treatment.

But hopefully it was just in this thing they have removed and you will have no further problems.

noddyholder · 11/02/2010 14:13

I had a vulval tumour in 2002 and it was caused by the same virus that causes cervical cancer but the cervical involvement was grade 1 and I had a loop excision but the lump was malignant and had to be excised and I had a reconstruction.I also had a tiny patch of dodgy skin like yours but it was removed under local and nothing more came of it.I have been clear ever since but when I have check ups they check everywhere as the cells can grow anywhere.usually they resolve on their own.I have had several patches of dysplasia on the vulva over the years but they have never progressed. They do waut and see.You could return in 3 months and all cells gone esp if you have a good immune system.I have to go out now but if you have any questions please ask xx

NeedCoffee · 11/02/2010 17:58

Thanks for sharing Noddy, bet it was difficult for you, I hope you are all clear now.

FA-I told him that my gran was recovering from bowel cancer and he said they're seperate issues. Yes he was trying to help me understand by mentioning the cervical cells issue I think, I will give it a couple of weeks to see if I hear from them as he said he would be writing to the gynae dept to see if they wanted me to have a coloscopy and if not I will go and have a chat with my GP to see if he can shed any light.
Thanks for your help

As noddyholder says HPV can cause changes in the vulva in addition to in the cervix - well it can cause cell changes in all the ano-genital region.
If it affects the anus it's called AIN (as opposed to CIN=cervix, VIN=vulval, VAIN=vaginal) and is a precancerous change.
The gynae dept sometimes manage women with AIN because the colposcope used for looking at cervix more closely can also have other uses.

It sounds like you are being referred on it the right direction (as the above I've written is obviously based on guesswork) but as I said earlier give it a week and see your GP. You may well not need any treatment as the cells were an incidental finding but it's as well to get properly checked out.
Hope this helps

NeedCoffee · 11/02/2010 22:11

Thanks, googled HPV and it makes a bit more sense now(kind of) he mentioned the connection to warts, although I've never had them, not even on my fingers or anything.
I hope I don't need any treatment as it was a bloody long recovery after the op itself and it fills me with dread to have any more interference iyswim.
Thanks again, will post if I have any developments!
