I had it done there about 6 years ago. It was done via keyhole surgery and relatively painless. Cannot stand hospitals and self discharged after two days.

No problems since. Good luck with the surgery !!

RTKangaMummy · 09/02/2010 20:31

Thanks for that

May I also ask if you are of voluptuous proportions like me?

I am worried about being sooooooooo voluptuous

RT, the anaesthetist wouldn't do it if he/she had any doubts about your safety. I used to work in theatres and have seen various ops cancelled due to medical reasons. The very nature of your op means that it is often being performed on more voluptuous ladies!

You'll be fine... Good luck!

RTKangaMummy · 09/02/2010 20:40

Thanks

Do they weigh me and then work out how much it will take to put me to sleep

What would they cancel it for? eg?

???

My BP is ok just I have asthma

How long until I can drive?

My local hospital refuses to do laparoscopic cholecystectomies on anyone with a BMI over 40 as the risk from the anaesthetic and potential for the surgery to go wrong is too great. Patients are usually sent away until they lose some weight.

RTKangaMummy · 09/02/2010 21:07

please can you tell me what the risks are?

OP posts:
emma1977 · 09/02/2010 21:27

Risks of difficulty in administering the anaesthetic, respiratory and cardiac problems during the op, bleeding during and after surgery, DVT and pulmonary emboli post-operatively, risk of perforating bowel or causing organ damage during op, higher risk of post-op infection and poorer wound healing post op.

akhems · 09/02/2010 21:29

I had my gallbladder out when I was 26 stone but it was done along with another surgery, laparoscopically and I was fine, not sure about the asthma tho, cos I don't have that.

Hope it goes well

RTKangaMummy · 09/02/2010 21:42

oke doke thanks

I have had my heart checked in such detail in last 6 months and it was found to be in tip top health

I had heart scans and also with the radioactive stuff injected in me so my heart is fine even though i am fat

~ my GP didn't seem to think there would be a problem with me being fat

Your photos are amazing

akhems · 09/02/2010 21:44

Thank you

as another poster said, if there is any doubt as to your safety they won't go ahead with it. I'm sure you'll be fine

RTKangaMummy · 09/02/2010 21:47

how long was the recovery?

did they critise you for being voluptuous?

did you have a band fitted at same time?

WeddingDaze · 09/02/2010 21:50

Can't answer the rest, but you can't drive for around a week, you have to be able to perform an emergency stop comfortably.

akhems · 09/02/2010 21:50

I had something called a duodenal switch where your intestines are re-routed and your stomach made smaller, my surgeon specialises in fatties lol. I had to wear v glamorous anti-dvt stockings afterwards and they have these inflatable boots sometimes which massage your legs which also helps with circulation.

No idea of the recovery time for a gall bladder removal on it's own, my surgery was pretty major (11 and a half hours) and it was a good 6 weeks before I was back on my feet. I should imagine you'd be fine after a week or two

RTKangaMummy · 09/02/2010 22:05

Thanks

My mum says I should have band fitted but I am terrifed of surgery so don't want it

I hope my surgeon is a fatty specialist too

Was your hospital near London?

I chose Royal Free as they do alot of gallbladder surgery so think they must have experience of fat people there

RTKangaMummy · 09/02/2010 22:07

what about the diaherra {sp}

How bad does it get after gallbladder surgery?

OP posts:
akhems · 09/02/2010 22:15

I had it done at King's in south london.

I did have diarrhoea afterwards but I think it was more my intestines protesting than anything else, lol

I live very close to the royal free if you fancy a visitor while you're in

RTKangaMummy · 09/02/2010 22:24

Thanks

South London is too far to go really

I have no idea when my op will be but I will here asking for positive vibes beforehand I am sure

My first appointment is in a couple of weeks ~ we can also check out the parking cos the website says it can be a problem

Hopefully the consultant will tell me if he thinks I am too fat then rather than make me wait

WEDDINGDAZE

Thanks for advice about driving the car after the operation

OP posts:
WeddingDaze · 09/02/2010 22:43

I had no issue with my bowels at all after, well except for not being able to go when in hospital, but that had nothing to do with the op!

RTKangaMummy · 10/02/2010 11:58

Thanks
