OK just had DS and need to decide on contraception for the next 18 months before we TTC our last little munchkin.

Any hormonal method is out unless DH wants me to turn into a homicidal yet weepy loon. I have tried about 15 different pills over the years and none of them agree with me.

Hate hate hate condoms, both of us, to the point where there isn't much point if we use them IYSWIM.

The coil worked well for me before, but I went to get one fitted a couple of months ago and freaked out when the Dr put the speculum in I would love to have another one, but I can't see how I get past the insertion, would they give me a sedative. I do appreciate that I am being a complete wus.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Emma, I know that unwanted pg is not just a teenage issue, it's just that you mentioned that the political pressure was because of the high teenage pg rate which doesn't apply to me.

I've got a batch of Nuvarings sitting in my fridge at work for the past year- can't give the bloody things away!

emma1977 · 07/02/2010 22:01

Wasn't suggesting it was bratnav. Just elaborating on a comment made by previous poster.

Most of my 30yrs+ patients aren't aware of any contraceptive methods other than pills and condoms, so it can make for some interesting consultations going through the vast array of choices.

Anyway, hope you sort your dilemma out.

bratnav · 07/02/2010 22:02

Do you have any feedback on Nuvarings emma?

Play together? The older two could stage a pretty good re-enactment of the Battle of Somme over a lolly wrapper.

The baby is now starting to join in, and he can yell for Scotland.

Today I caught him pulling DD1's hair as she sat in a beanbag chair, trying to prise a Wii Mote out of her hand.

She peeled his hand off her hair and then thumped him one on the forehead.

DH came running in after hearing both their yells.

Every day, he's more and more glad he got snipped!

expatinscotland · 07/02/2010 22:07

'ost of my 30yrs+ patients aren't aware of any contraceptive methods other than pills and condoms,'

I don't know how they aren't aware of that farking Mirena coil when every healthcare professional in the entire UK is trying to shove one up women in that age range.

When I went in to the GP for postnatal appointment first thing she said was, 'You'll be wanting a coil.'

I told her I'd rather get pregnant again than have a coil.

I've still got pockmark acne scars from that bloody thing.

Even severe PND didn't kill my libido the way that thing did.

emma1977 · 07/02/2010 22:07

No feedback yet from patients as noone fancies it. Was going to try it myself to see what the deal was, but am now pregnant so it will have to wait for a while.

The drug rep tells me how fantastically popular they are in Spain- but I take these claims with a large pinch of salt.

bratnav · 07/02/2010 22:10

Oh we aren't the Waltons, but we get through most days without blood spilled or concussion, maybe I just love 'manic'

emma1977 · 07/02/2010 22:11

Mirena certainly seems to be a love/hate thing for many, or hate/hate if you're expat!

bratnav · 07/02/2010 22:15

I looked on the website and it looks like it just sits in your vag, what happens when you have sex, surely you would feel it/it would dislodge?

Right IUD and diazepam I think, how long would I not be able to feed DS for afterwards?

'The drug rep tells me how fantastically popular they are in Spain'

Popular in the US, too. That's where I first heard of it.

bellissima · 08/02/2010 10:03

Entirely agree expat - I get the flaming unsubtle Mirena coil lecture every time I venture near the GP. For my (40+) age group the mantra is 'ease you into the menopause' . Now undoubtedly the menopause is coming up but given that I currently have no symptoms just why do I want 'easing'? Its a political push plus some GP incentives to get us up to Scandinavian levels of coil use, no matter what our humble opinions and wishes might be.

weegiemum · 08/02/2010 10:10

When I suggested Persona my GP dh laughed like a loon and said he had dealt with several pregnancies where the babies middle name should be Persona!

This, of course, from me, whose dd2 should have Mirena for a middle name!

weegiemum · 08/02/2010 10:12

If you do go for mirena, anyone, please ask for a coil check if you have it done anytime after insertion.

I had a smear a year after mine was put in (still had lochia when it was inserted so couldn't do a smear then and I wasn't due anyway) and it was pulled into my cervix.

Bingo! Dd2 arrived 9 months later!

weegiemum · 08/02/2010 10:13

That's if you have a smear done anytime after mirena insertion!

QuintessentialSnowStorm · 08/02/2010 10:15

abstinence. Cunnilingus

expatinscotland · 08/02/2010 12:02

We used Persona to conceive DD2.

It worked a treat! First month we used it I was pregnant.

I dread developing any problems with my period, bellisima, because I know the only thing that will be suggested to be is that damn Mirena.

Then, if you tell them it sent you psycho, you never stopped bleeding, show them pockmark acne scars on your face, they'll all say, 'Oh, I've never heard of that happening before.'

Bollocks.

I had mine put in at a FPC, too.

NoahAndTheWhale · 08/02/2010 12:05

I have a friend in Germany who has a NuvaRing at the moment - her doctor had some as a free trial I think.

Sonilaa · 08/02/2010 12:14

Persona worked great for me for nearly ten years. Good thing, since it is kind of a ovulation monitor, you can turn its use around when ttc.

Now I am thinking about a copper coil. Any experience here with that?

Bonsoir · 08/02/2010 12:15

Why don't you have an implant? Or is that hormonal contraception in your book?

expatinscotland · 08/02/2010 12:45

The implant is hormonal. It's progesten-based.

Truly, copper coil sounds a bulletproof choice if financially you really can't get pregnant just now, but hate condoms.

bellissima · 08/02/2010 14:01

Thing is, expat, I'm not surprised the Mirena can cause those side effects - its hormone is only progesterone isn't it? The same thing that is in the mini pill - which gave my sister 'flooding' (in work meetings - nice), weight gain, bad moods and so forth. Thing is, she could just stop taking it.

I mentioned the Mirena push to the doc at a private Bupa health check last year and he expressed cynicism that anything could 'ease you into the menopause' if it contained no oestrogen. Now - NB!- I appreciate that the whole issue of oestrogen replacement is an entirely different debate, risks/rewards etc. But in any case my blood tests showed I wasn't 'there' yet and he confirmed that something containing only progesterone might simply muck up my periods.

YoMoJo · 08/02/2010 14:28

Ive just had a copper coil fitted. Had it fitted as soon as last period finished, then bled heavily for a week (was told i might get "spotting") had a week with no bleeding & now my period again! so 3 weeks of bleeding out of 4!!!

Not sure if I have made the right decision... hence me lurking on here. Just cant get my head around having something permanently inserted up me fanjo & the fear of an ectopic pregnancy.

There is no reason why I cant take the pill other than the possiblity of "human error" but I thought it might be more hassle free. Not sure how long I should give it before i head back to the GP to take it out

Will make appointment with GP then for copper coil, anyone got any idea how long I would need to 'pump and dump' afterwards if I do take diazepam to get me through it?
