Any doctors about? can you help me decipher an abbreviation in my medical notes?

I visited the doctor for a routine check up about my contraceptive pill, and the doctor seeing me asked me many questions about it and how I was reacting to it (it was a new pill as my old one had given me lots of side effects including tiredness, headaches and mood swings). He then said "the last doctor has written pfw - do you know what this might mean? Obviously I didn't and left the surgery, quite happy, but wondering what pfw meant?!!!

any ideas?

just looked it up and got 'potential future wife' as a suggestion - possibly not the answer you wanted

i did cheat though, DH is a GP and I asked him!

ShowOfHands · 04/02/2010 22:11

JoeJoe, can you ask your dh something for me?

JoeJoe1977 · 04/02/2010 22:13

He's gone upstairs, I think to bed, will ask if he appears downstairs, otherwise will have to post back tomorrow.

ShowOfHands · 04/02/2010 22:20

Don't worry too much. Just a quick question about what will happen at an appointment I have coming up.

I had a copper coil fitted 4 weeks ago and was told I have to see my GP 4-6 weeks after fitting. What will happen? Will it involve an internal? And I'm spotting with it, which the leaflet says is a normal side effect in the first few months, but will the GP care ie will he be worried and send me off for smear etc or do they just note it and send you home?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 04/02/2010 22:22

Patient feeling well?

BitOfFun · 04/02/2010 22:30

Should think they'll nod and say "Mmm, yes, that can happen", SOH- I wouldn't worry.

JoeJoe1977 · 04/02/2010 22:30

Haven't checked with DH (he has gone to bed), but I think a coil check does normally involve an internal examination as the nurse/GP needs to check that they can see the threads of the coil. Other than that it's just a quick chat to make sure that you're happy with things.

See here this is from a website that DH often recommends for patients.

ShowofHands - "but will the GP care ie will he be worried and send me off for smear etc"
they shouldn't be sending you off to have a smear on the basis of bleeding after a coil fitting as it's not a diagnostic test.

ShowOfHands · 04/02/2010 22:43

Fine I think! No temp, no pain, no offensive discharge. Had a week of antibiotics after the coil fitting as it was fitted as part of another procedure and the antibiotics were preventative so pretty sure there's no infection.

ShowOfHands · 04/02/2010 22:45

Yeah, by smear etc, I meant gynae checks in general.

bof, are you sad. Shall I be interested in your fanjo? I can pretend if you like? Erm, does it bite?

ShowOfHands · 04/02/2010 22:47

Sorry to hijack btw and thank you for the responses and link!

BitOfFun · 04/02/2010 22:48

Oh my fanjo is a hermit this week, thanks. I went onto the copper coil recently, and the periods are a bit of a passion-killer . Action at the GP's isn't the ideal solution

ShowOfHands · 04/02/2010 22:51

My GP's pleasant enough but he has pictures of cross sections of the female reproductive organs next to his couch. It's in no way a replacement is it?

First period started today. So far? Not Good.

BitOfFun · 04/02/2010 22:55

Apparently it gets better. I'm on no.4, and it's a bit lighter than the first three.

alypaly · 05/02/2010 00:05

i think it means prima facie warranted which means a duty of care to you to give you follow ups and on going check ups as you were hgaving problems.

unless he has put you on a progesterone free , but not sure what the w might stand for

alypaly · 05/02/2010 00:06

progesterone free warranted [guess emotion]

weegiemum · 05/02/2010 00:09

If you have a smear after a coil fitting, then please have the coil checked. I didn't, so didn't notice it had slipped into my cervix .....

Dd2 is now 6!

(always wanted to type that!)
