PILL info- anyone on Yaz?

The new version of Yasmin?
My DD is having problems finding a pill to suit- she is at uni and cannot get PG!

Dianeete was given for acne- caused terrible depression/weepiness. Yasmin caused bad headaches. Now on Loestrin and getting headaches during bleed week, but also feeling a bit down. That's a worry for me as she is doing her finals this summer and lives a long way away.

All these were tried for just 3 months.

Anyone recommend any- what about good old Microgynon etc? Or, anyone tried Yaz?

She's going back to uni DR but feel they are all shooting in the dark a bit.

Does she not fancy the coil? I couldn't find a pill to suit so I went for that.

not discussed- but the coil is not 100% effective and I wouldn't be too sure about that for her in her situation.

If I remember the spiel my GP gave me, it's about the same effectiveness as the pill, i.e. 98/99% with the bonus that you can't forget to take it, and if you puke it doesn't matter. They are trying to promote 'fit and forget' contraceptives at for younger women the moment for these reasons. As far as I can see the pill is completely random re suitability - you just have to keep swapping until you find one (although staying on each type for 3 months to give the side effects a chance to fade). I found this a massive hassle.

Can she ask about having the injection - depo provera?

I couldn't take the pill for the same reasons you've given and I though the injection was brilliant! Just one little injection every three months and that's it.

I was on Microgynon for 4 years and have now switched to a copper coil as I don't think hormones are suitable for me. I got severely depressed on Microgynon and gained a lot of weight.

I am in exactly the same position, I'm at uni doing finals and nulliparous. My uni GP was perfectly happy to fit a coil and I'm so glad that I'm now covered for 10 years without having to remember to take anything. I feel that with the odds of getting pregnant so low, I have done all that I can to prevent pregnancy.

Copper coil is more effective that the pill in typical use (0.8% to 8% failure rate in the first year). There is no method of contraception that is 100% effective short of surgery. Even sterilisation (male and female) can fail.

Just in case you want it, the perfect use rates of failure in the first year are 0.3% for the pill, 0.6% for the coil but the chances of actually using the pill perfectly (i.e. not missing pills and using another method of contraception for at least a week after sickness or diarrhoea) is much lower.

Was on yasmin but I bled constantly for a month. Now on microgynon but putting on a serious amount of weight so I can't recommend either.

The problem with the injection is once it's in, it's in. You can't reverse it until it wears off and you don't know how you're going to react to it before you have it.

I think Yasmin is one of the newer, more sophisticated pills so may be worth a try. I used Microgynon when I was 17/18 and it was fine. Then used it a couple of years ago and it was awful! Mood swings and bad skin. So I think your hormones can change over time even if you haven't had a baby or anything.
