colon spasms - what other symptoms?

I am a bit puzzled by a diagnosis I have received, and would like to hear experiences and views please.

GP has diagnosed colon spasms when I went to him after 5 days' increasing abdominal pain - fair enough.

But it isn't what I was expecting to hear. I felt sure that it wasn't a digestive problem. My digestion has always been great, we eat a vegetarian wholefood & pulses kind of diet (plus wine ). I have had no problems at all going to the loo. No vomiting, no excess wind, no symptoms that seemed to have anything to do with digestion at all. And he did agree that it didn't explain the shivers and chills I was having.

I know from googling that colon spasms are related to IBS. But doesn't that usually involve urgent runs to the loo, diarrhoea, that sort of thing?

the pain is easing off now, but still there - it started at front, now moved to lower back, but extends around above my hips and tops of legs. I couldn't stand up for a couple of days, & looked and felt really ill. I also had a neck rash that I get with inflammation/ infections.

so can anyone tell me whether they had colonic spasms with no other digestive problems? Or any other views please?

IBS doesn't always involve constipation/gas/diarrhoea. I used to have the problem as a teenager... would get terrible cramping pains and precious few other symptoms. My problem, I later realised, was a poor diet but it never translated to physical digestion problems, just the cramps.

Some people can find too much fibre in the diet causes problems. However, if you've had a wholefood, vegetarian diet for some time and if it hasn't changed recently then I wouldn't have thought diet is the culprit. It could be that you have some type of mild food poisoning, an inflamed colon, a lower gut infection or some kind of virus perhaps.... an infection or mild fever could explain the shivers and chills.

Thanks chil, that's helpful to know. Hope you are free of symptoms now.
