Came on yesturday morning, and all yesturday and today it is so heavy, so heavy in fact that twice it has run down my leg, once when I got out of bed last night (have spent 2 hours with the Vanish on the caprpet) and just now when I was making ds2 lunch, it reached my socks before I knew it!

I am having to change a super plus Lilet every hour with a pad on also.

I've had heavy periods in the past, suffered from endometriosis but always with pain and this time I have no pain at all.

The blood is really a mix of bright red and dark witha few little clots.

What the F is going on? I hate F'ing periods!

This happened to me, just once. I flooded through everything very suddenly; luckily was in dark trousers. I changed into gym kit (heaven knows what they thought at work!) but flooded through that right away, drove home quickly, looked like a slaughterhouse. The next day everything was normal.

Could you have had an early miscarriage? I wondered about this ...

Whippet · 02/02/2010 12:45

It's happened to me a few times too - really not nice .

My GP identified some possible triggers:

  • severe stress/ affecting hormones
  • continuous use of over-the-counter medicines (e.g. paracetamol/ ibuprofen) in the days before my period

You can get Tranexamic Acid tablets from you GP to reduce the flow (and stop you becoming anaemic).

MoChan · 02/02/2010 12:45

Mine are all like that nowadays. I have been assuming it is something to do with the fibroids I've been developing in the last few years. That's been a gradual change, though, so probably doesn't help you.

Would have thought an early miscarriage would hurt a bit, wouldn't it?

carocaro · 02/02/2010 12:49

Thanks but defo not a miscarraige, not had sex in three months, me and DH quite stressed at the mo, redundancy, employment tribunal, 2 deaths in the family, no £ whatsoever, you know the drill.

Those tables sound good though!

How old are you.

I remember someone telling me they had really heavy periods then started the menopause.

Elibean · 02/02/2010 13:28

carocaro, this happened to me twice in my thirties.....GP explained it was an anovulatory cycle (didn't ovulate that cycle) and the body then has a different mechanism for shedding uterine lining. Can't remember the science, but the end result is a very very heavy, but un-crampy, bleed. I usually had/have light periods but those two were gushing and totally different.

And it had nothing to do with menopause, its not uncommon for women to skip an ovulation occasionally especially if stressed or travelling or just because.

HTH, if it doesn't stop after a couple of days, or keeps happening, do go to GP anyway.

Endo can also cause heavy bleeding; your description of the blood at the end of your initial post could well be endometriosis (I recognise that description well).

Unfortunately as well endometriosis can recur.

If it keeps happening I would ask your GP to refer you back to the gynae. You need to determine the cause as well as treat the symptoms,
