hypnosis for weight control?

Has anyone tried this? I have an appointment next week to start it - I know how to lose weight, what is healthy etc etc but have some really bad habits that I can't stop which sabotage my weight loss, I overeat, comfort eat and 'pick' when bored.
I only want to lose about a stone but feel if I don't nip this in the bud it will keep creeping on until I get even more of a porker!

A friend had a very bad experience with a hypnotherapist when she wanted to quit smoking. In an effort to find out why she started he dredged up a lot of bad memories plus a few 'false memories' in the process. She not only carried on smoking but developed an alcohol problem as a result. So just be careful what the parameters are and know what to expect.

Truthfully, if you know you have bad habits then the smart move is to tackle them individually. For example, if you eat more when you're bored or unhappy then make sure there isn't much food around in your home and what food there is, is healthy stuff like fruit and vegetables. Rather than trying not to be bored or not to want comfort you can relax knowing that if it's not there to 'pick', you can't eat it.

Another practical measure is to get more exercise. That way you can enjoy a little more to eat and still control your weight nicely.

But good luck with hypnosis. Hope it's worth the money

Crikey! that sounds a bit mad, some of my food issues do stem from childhood but I like to think I'm quite balanced in general so hopefully false memories won't be an issue. We didn't have alot to eat except weekends when we went to grandparents.

I know all of those other things about fruit, veg etc but I still dig out anything sweet or unhealthy that might be buried in the cupboard! And I am dreadful at motivating myself to do exercise - I will be great for about a month then congratualate myself by skiving off for the next 6 mths......

I do think I self sabotage subconciously.

Hypnosis can work wonders for a variety of issues such as eating. Make sure the person has the right qualifications though and experience. Hypnosis (or hynotherapy) basically stops you wanting to eat 'bad' foods. My mum is a hypnotherapist and she's helped me with phobias, sleeping issues and labour pains. I think the whole concept is brilliant.

Hi bonny. I had a first consultation for this last week and feel quite confident about it. It was mainly answering a lot of questions to give some background and context and the way the hypnotherapist talked on the subject made a lot of sense to me.

If you're anything like me you know all what is 'good' and 'bad' for you and I find I eat when I'm bored/anxious/tired etc. So as as I understand it the hypno will be helping me with this aspect, i.e:

eat when you are hungry.

stop when you are full.

(that is it in it's most simple form). Paul McKenna's book goes into detail about it but I couldn't listen to his CD for laughing at his daft hypno voice!

Good luck with it!

It works really well for some people, or so I'm told. I tried it and had 5 sessions. I don't think I was 'properly' hypnotised as it didn't work at all on me.
One of the techniques was to get me to visualise something that I really like to eat like chocolate cake, then imagine that someone threw up on it or it had bugs climbing on it. Gross!
Anyway, being as I have too much of a practical mind, and knowing that this is not going to be the case with my lovely, lovely chocolate cake. I was able to see through the ruse!
I really hope that it works for you. Just try not to laugh (I kept picturing Paul McKenna when the hypnotist was being serious).

You do have to let yourself go and trust it is going to work and trust the person doing the hypnotherapy. If it works, it feels lovely too. Better than two gin and tonics!

(Sorry just picking my daughter up) lowlevelwhinging that sounds just like me - I also tried the Paul Mckenna stuff and found the concept quite successful apart from that awful voice! couldn't listen to it, made me want to laugh (note to self do not think of 'little britain' sketch during first session either).
I've checked up on the hypnotherapist I'm going to and she has good qualifications and has been in practise a long time. She does 'life coaching' too, that looks interesting.......I could become hooked!
