Pereneal Abcess

Hi,

This is my first pregnancy, now 14 weeks. For the past month I have had a re-accurring abcess in the right of my bum cheek and near to my anus. This is extremely painful and am now on my third dose of anti-biotics. Recently the skin has started peeling to reveal a bruise, i am hoping this may be a good sign! I have been told that if the abcess remains at the end of the week, I will need to be put to sleep and have it removed. My doc says no risk from the anesthesia to the baby but I have read other conflicting info on the internet. I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this abcess while pregnant or had any surgery in the 2nd trimester? I am concerned about it but also dont want to keep feeding myself antibiotics and pain killers.

Thanks

well i had one when I was 8 weeks pg at the top of my bottom area, but wasn't sure how pregnant I was till later... anyway, the dr didn't let me have oral antibiotics, and just gave me cream - this didn't work at all, and the abscess got soooooo sore etc and I started to get a tiny bit feverish from the infection.... in the end after a week between it going from a bit tender to agony, I went to the dr again, who sent me to the hospital for surgery, but because of me being pregnant they refused to give me a general anaesthetic, so just gave me a local anaesthetic (they tried just using magic cream but I complained), and then cut a deep hole into the abscess and removed the puss as much as they could (please no one vomit over this), basically it was agony and I'm now waiting to see if childbirth is more or less painful than that... but it hasn't returned as of yet so I guess it did the job.

Thanks for the reply its interesting that they cut you under local, i have been told they wont do this, but could have been because you were in first trimester. Glad it has not come back, to be honest I am told that surgery is probably inevitable in these cases but doc keeps giving me anti biotics. I have seen 3 different docs and all say these tablets will not hurt baby. At least with the pain of child birth its for a reason, that swhat I keep telling myself

I think there are a couple of reasons why they don't normally do local - firstly you cant properly remove a whole chunk and definitely the root (lol) of the problem because it is just too painful, and secondly because if you have alot of puss, it stops the local anaesthetic working. So basically normally they would never do that kinda thing under local but they wanted to be safe rather than sorry for my baby, even though it meant that I was in super duper amounts of pain from a 2cm deep hole they cut. Bring on childbirth...
