Do you think I should be worried? my BP was taken today and it was 160 over 110

Last time they took it (about 6 months ago) it was 106 over 55

At this rate presumably I will be shuffling off my perch quite soon?

That is rather high. Are you PG? I'm guessing not unless you're posting from a hospital bed?

Was it the doc who took it? Is he doing anything about it? Were you very stressed at the time?

moodlum · 01/02/2010 19:44

It was the Dr who took it, and she took it twice because she was concerned (I'd gone it because I've had a headache for the last two weeks).. I was pretty relaxed tbh, she was running an hour late and I just bought a magazine and read it for an hour so I was pretty calm.

She wants me to go back in a week. And you're right, I'm not up the duff (thank goodness otherwise I'd be in trouble..)

well the worst thing to do is worry but if you aren't happy leaving it a week I would have no qualms going back in a few days especially if you continue to have headaches

moodlum · 01/02/2010 19:59

Thanks, that's what I thought. See how things go until the end of the week and then try not to have a weekend fretting.

Thanks ladies.

moodlum, thats why she is sending you for a scan..it is pretty high. Dont do too much til you get your diastolic blood pressure below 90.

Have you had any kidney problems lately. I hope they get it sorted soon as i am sure you have a really bad headache with the pressure

gtamom · 02/02/2010 04:52

Don't be worried, because stress makes blood pressure higher.
It is too high, and you probably will be put on meds if it stays that way. I agree with going back if you still have the headache. Pain can also make it higher.
Meanwhile you can help lower it by cutting out salt, caffeine and making sure you get a good sleep every night, and a 15 minute walk every day. And if you smoke, it is time to stop. (Your doc can help you with that)
Best of luck.

Thanks all. Just waiting for her to call me with a time to go in. DH just took my BP and it was lower, so that's something.

I did once have a similar reading (3 times over!) and they refused to let me use the gym until I went to the doctor. At the doc's it was normal. The doctor thought there was a problem with the first machine. Overnight I bought a stack of books on dealing with HBP . I do hope it all works out ok.

smee · 02/02/2010 10:03

Had you been drinking coffee? someone told me that can increase BP.

moodlum · 02/02/2010 10:08

I'd had one cup yesterday morning, which I usually do, so it could be that.

Maybe next time you go to get it checked don't have a cup before hand. Might be something as simple as that. DH had similar. He still drinks coffee though, so fear not.

moodlum · 02/02/2010 10:16

I gave up alcohol for January, and DH thinks its my body's shock at abstinence

So a bottle of red before the next appointment..?

stanausauruswrecks · 02/02/2010 12:42

Don't panic!!!!
in BP terms, it's not great, but it's not that bad! To make a diagnosis of high BP your GP will need to take 3 readings over a period of about 3 weeks. If it's still up after that time (or if you have other risk factors such as diabetes) then the recommendation is to start treatment. Otherwise it's a case of regular monitoring & lifestyle changes - regular exercise, no fags, cakes or chips, and moderate alcohol intake. HTH

I would just like to say it is much better to try and control your bp on your own as tablets are not only then prescribed for life but you are quite often stuck with lots of side-effects e.g. fatigue, early morning waking, loss of libido, I tried 4 different types and in the end just gave up, lost a stone in weight and started on parsley tea.

My bp is now 140 over 90 which although not brilliant is much bettter than it was and I plan to get it down lower by joining the gym, once I can afford it, hopefully later this year.

I really did struggle with the bp tablets it is not something to take lightly hope that helps!
