What contraceptive pill are you on / have you been on? Anyone take Yasmin?

I've been taking Yasmin for about 5 days and my boobs seem to have grown by about half a cup size already. No other side effects yet......

In the past I've been on microgynon 30 and Trinovum - both a nightmare - weight gain, skin crators and crying....

Anyway, I couldn't get my GP to prescribe me this pill - I got it courtesy of Lloyds online pharmacy and I had to pay £30! I am not happy about this but I want a pill that does not ruin my life in other respects!

yes I take it and I love it. I also can't tolerate the others. I say I love it but what I really mean I suppose, is that I can tolerate it which is a godsend.

interestingly, I couldn't get my GP to prescribe it either despite the gynae recommending it and having proper reactions to the other pills (rashes etc.).

So I pay for it too. Pharmacist was horrified that I had to pay tbh.

I am on week 3 of Yasmin after being prescribed it to stop my periods for 3 months as my endo is back with a vengeance... anyway, so far so good. I have also been on microgynon and dianette, and the Evil Zoladex, all of which sent me into a psychotic frenzy of weight gain and random sobbing/rage.

My boobs do feel bigger too (which is actually a PITA as they were plenty big enough to start with) and I have noticed an improvement in my skin, and a lower appetite. I have also started going to the gym 4 times a week. And whether it's related to the pill or not, I am more energetic and have lost 6lbs without even really trying. I feel quite stable and sane compared to how other pills and Zoladex made me feel.

So, so far, I am impressed. I have had no spotting yet, am due "on" in a week or so but I will be taking the pill back to back so we shall see if I have any issues.

Good luck too

Why would your dr not let you have it? Cost or unsuitable for you?
Have you tried a Family Planning Clinic?

My DD got on very badly with Yasmin and Dianette- both given initially for acne- but now seems better on Loestrin.
Why not go to you r local FPC?

mylittlepeanut · 01/02/2010 16:04

I'm in the US and Yasmin seems to be the pill of choice out here. I also have had the bigger breasts which is great for me as I used to be a A cup or a B if I was lucky, the odd thing is though that they go back down to normal size when I have my period which is the exact opposite to what I used to have with Microgynom.

electra · 01/02/2010 16:32

Thanks for replies. Purplepeony - I told the doctor I wanted to try Yasmin because other pills make my skin errupt and I also suffer terribly with water retention whether on the pill or not. He was adamant that the pill I needed to be on was Dianette.....

Do you think I would have more luck at the FPC?

Dianette is not usually prescribed as an OC unless you also have an issue with acne- in fact it can be dangerous- it has a high hormone content linked to blood clots and stroke. My DD was told that she could have it for acne- this was at an appt with a dermo, privately, which she did but it made her feel awful.

Personally, I'd go to your FPC- they are often more up to date and have no axe to grind re. costs.

foxinsocks · 01/02/2010 17:03

mine wouldn't prescribe it because of the cost issue

this does particularly grate as I know several people who go there to get calpol and nurofen on prescription (who aren't in any way struggling in terms of cash - I know they don't cost much but it's the principle iyswim - I have no problem with people who cannot afford them or need them on a permanent basis getting them prescribed but I'm talking people who can afford private school!) and we buy our eczema creams rather than getting them on prescription (because it's such a pita to get an appointment just to get the prescription).

But hey ho

electra · 01/02/2010 17:13

I agree foxinsocks - what is the point of the NHS if you can't get the medication you need? Purplepeony - thanks for your advice. I did some research on Dianette and read that it is also linked to liver cancer in long term users and I am not keen to use something which has a very high hormone content... I do not have a general problem with acne - my skin is usually clear unless I am on the pill. It doesn't sound like the GP I saw was very informed.

I was on logyon for 15 years but 3 mths ago had a implant and its been fantasic i would recomend it no more remembering to take a pill daily.

electra · 01/02/2010 17:27

I don't really want anything permanent though because often it's a case of trial and error with hormone based contraceptives isn't it?

electra - I put on loads of weight with yasmin but it did nothing for my skin so went back to the dianette which I never had any problems with...

electra · 01/02/2010 17:44

Yeah, I think it depends very much on the individual, so I guess I will try Yasmin for the 3 months I have and if it works well for me I will go to the FPC and see if I can get it prescribed.

Hey ladies,

If any of you have a free moment please answer my quick survey on contraception/the pill! Shouldn't take more than a few minutes and would be massively appreciated.

Hi I know this post is really old and probably won't get a reply but have any of you had Lucille? Go told me it's the replacement for Yasmin? How did you get on does anyone know of it's going to be the same side effects etc? Thank you
