Anything fade scars? DS (almost two) had an accident

..my lovely, gorgeous little DS fell over and cut his head on a step, we had to get checked out and cleaned up and steri-strips at A&E. Poor little man had a huge bandage on afterwards but he was so brave.

So now the steri-strips have been off two weeks and the scar is still raised and still red, can anybody suggest anything to put on to perhaps calm the scar down?

It's on his forehead, about half an inch long, vertical.

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Bio oil is supposed to be good. You can also buy plasters that soften the keloid in the scar so that it flattens.

I wouldn't worry too much though, young children usually heal really well. My DS had a bad scar just over his eyebrow and it faded away over last two years. I have to really search his skin to find the scar now.

I think with bio oil you have to wait for the scar to totally heal. He is very young, so the skin is regenerating a lot - 2 weeks is a short time, I'm sure it will become invisible by itself soon enough.

DD2 had awful chickenpox scars on her face. I took her to see a plastic surgeon and he recommend Dermatix. It's a silicone gel that great for healing atrophied keyloid scars ie raised, red scars.

You can get it over the counter. It's ecxpensive (£38 per tube), but you only need a tiny bit per application. You can't get it on prescription.

DD2's scars are now gone. She was 3 when we started using it.

My plastic surgeon (nasty mole on face not new boobs btw) said that it didn't matter if you used silicon gel, bio oil or olive oil but it did help if you massage the scar gently for a few mins twice a day. Not sure how you get a toddler to sit still while you do that though.

dd had a burn when she was 18 months. it took a good year to go down but is hardly noticable now. Good luck.

I've recently had breast surgery and my surgeon recommended Dermatix. Last year dh had keyhole hernia surgery; his surgeon would agree with trice in that what you massage in is less crucial than the massaging. That said, he recommended nivea cream - the old fashioned thick one in the blue tub ! The reason for recommending nivea was its thick texture, which combined with the actual massaging would be beneficial.

last summer I had a port put in for my chemotherapy; used bio oil religiously and it didn't make any difference...port has come out now through that same scar (during same op as above) - I will be using Dermatix this time, but only got it a few days ago so it's too early to tell if it will help.

Bio Oil definitely.

MattBellamysMuse · 01/02/2010 18:14

Wolverine, how old was your DD when you started using it?
DS1 has awful chickenpox scars which are more like craters tthan raised scars but he's had them since he was 3 and is now 7. Do you think it could work for him?

Thandeka · 01/02/2010 18:15

You can also get silicone plasters which apply pressure to the scar and raise the temp reducing its appearance or if it still won't go a series of steroid injections (ouchy for 2 year old) but I would imagine it will fade without too much hassle.

(Vit e oil massaged in (split a capsule) is also supposed to be good).

So speaketh queen of keloid scars- I have zillions- my skin scars horrendously and I have tried lots of different things but best is learning not to be bothered in slightest by them!

HinnyPet · 01/02/2010 19:37

Hmm, I'm not sure about BioOil as I used it religiously on my tummy throughout two pregnancies and made no difference!
He would probably pick off the silicone plaster, good idea though.
I think the Vitamin E oil would be worth a try, it must still hurt, bless him as I tried massaging gently with Avent magic cream earlier and he was wincing. Vitamin E could be massaged in easier than cream Ithink.

Thank you all for your very helpful replies!
