I had a mole removed and now have a horrible itchy red scar instead

GP noticed a scar on my back and offered to remove it.

It never really bothered me but did get caught on my bra strap sometimes so I said yes.

Anyway she removed it at the minor ops clinic (about 6 mths ago) and now I have this horrible HUGE scar on my back, it is about twice the size of the mole and all lumpy and red and it itches like hell

Does this sound normal? scars do sometimes take some time to settle down I think?

I had a mole removed from my back when I was 11, I remember it being itchy for quite a while after.
18 years on, it still has it's moments.
If you are concerned, get your gp to have a look at it

How long ago was it?
I would suggest you go back and ask to be referred to a dermo if your GP cannot offer any answers- it sounds like a KELOID scar. This is a reaction some people have to surgery. Sometimes they are best left and fade in time, as cutting the skin can make it worse, but you do need an expert opinion.

I had a mole removed from my face nearly 2 years ago. It worried me a lot as it was angrily red and itchy/painful for a good year afterwards. It was unsightly.

It is now fine - I still get shooting pains in it from time to time (why?) however the redness has settled right down and it is now a very discreet scar, hasn't gone keloid. Perhaps you need to give it more time.

TBH if I were you I would go back to the DR, I have heard that if you are developing a keloid scar it is easier to prevent it reather than try to get rid of it after the event.

Mii, whatw as the path report? Was it all benign?
If so you have nothing to worry about, but if it was an atypical mole you should really go back and get it seen to just in case this means it's not playing ball.

However as others have said it could well just be a keloid scar and that can be managed. Let us know how you get on.

My father had a keloid scar after surgery. He found it was less itchy after he rubbed vitamin E into it (pierce a capsule with a pin to get the liquid out). But I think you should go back to the GP first, for an opinion on whether the scar is healing as it should.

I think I have quite a similar situation. The edges of my scar from a recent mole removal have widened, leaving a big red scar and I feel pretty down about it, as it turned out to be benign and the scar is uncomfortable when I try to sleep on my side, it is three times the length the Dr said it would be and it is just under where by bra does up at the back, meaning I have to wear a special, uncomfortable, bra extender for a few months while it heals. Can you offer any comfort on how the scar looks some years on? I guess I am hoping to hear some positives rather than negatives to cheer me up. Thanks, Elaine
