Any doctors/nurses around? Quick Q about scars (from surgery)

If someone had an operation nearly a year ago, keyhole, and one of their scars - not the line, the row of dots from the staples - is suddenly red and a bit of pus is coming out, is that anything to worry about, or can you just slap some antiseptic cream on and wait for it to go?

If it was going to be a complication, it would have happened far sooner than nearly a year after surgery, wouldn't it?

Not necessarily, infections happen all the time. It's a sign of an infection though so it needs looking at asap and some antibiotics.

Red and pus coming out = visit to the GP for a look at it imo. In fact, unless something is a definate spot, pus coming from anywhere is a GP visit

Thanks. anti-biotics? I was hoping some savlon or sudecrem would be ok. I've just been to doctors for my fibro review and I hate going too often in case he thinks I'm a hypochondriac

I'd keep an eye on it for a few days. If its getting worse (or no better) get it checked out. Seems unlikely its anything to do with the operation a year on. What was the op? Is the person feeling well in themselves?

TheChewyToffeeMum · 31/01/2010 20:18

Even the best hypochondriacs can't produce pus! He would want to see you for this - don't worry.

heQet · 31/01/2010 20:23

oh yes, I'm fine thanks. It was a sleeve gastrectomy. I feel ok. Bit hot and dizzy but that is because I am just getting over a bad cold.

I have a long standing 'thing' where I can't go to doctors unless I have something physical I can show them. But even if I do (like with this pus), I can't go if I've just been for something else .

Wouldn't bother with savlon or sudocrem, they're not going to do anything helpful. Sounds like you've developed this infection as you're a bit run down after your bad cold. Get yourself down to the GP as soon as you can bear it, and definitely go straight away if it gets worse!

mosschops30 · 31/01/2010 20:42

yes get down the GP, I am currently nursing my c-section scar which was leaking pus, turns out I had mrsa and even though the wound is no longer leaking and has healed i still have mrsa on the scar so have an anti fungal type cream and anti bacterial medication to take for a week

littlemefi · 31/01/2010 22:47

I'm a nurse, and agree with the advice given, pus usually equally infection. Gp will prob swab it and prescibe antibiotics.

EccentricaGallumbits · 31/01/2010 22:49

yup. puss=infection.

i'm the same though - feel like an utter hypochondriac and have to explain myself even when they don't care why i'm there.
