Natural headache remedies

I quite often get cracking headaches, nothing wrong, I'm just prone to them. I usually pop a pill straight away as if left they can make me really nauseous. But now I'm pg I'm more reluctant to take anything. Does anyone have any natural remedies that actually work.

I have one at the moment and I think it is a combination of tiredness, coldness, and stress that has caused it.

I use 4head - its a menthol-type stick you rub across your forehead, has a sort of cooling relaxing effect. You can get it in any chemist.

I think Lush also do something that you rub on your temples with a similar effect.

Chillohippi · 31/01/2010 18:18

I used 4Head when I was pregnant and it worked well for me.

Bumperlicious · 31/01/2010 18:19

Actually I've just used my Origins On The Spot Relief (or something like that) which is a menthol cream. Didn't think it would help but it has a bit.

Does the 4head help?

Orgasms are a natural painkiller. Employ DH - tell him it's for your health and the baby's!

KurriKurri · 31/01/2010 18:23

I think it does, especially for the sort of tired/stressed headaches you describe.

Origins do a little bottle of goo called Stress Buster: Peace of Mind which is really good. I find it more effective than 4head.

mine are (individually, not together!):
-mint (herbal) tea with a little sugar
-good old polo mints (NOT sugar free, ie standard)
-vit B complex
-deep breaths, ideally in cold air
-splashing wrists and neck with cold water

if you pinch the "webbed" bit of skin between your thumb and forefinger, that is an accupuncture point that, IME, takes the pain away.

Bumperlicious · 31/01/2010 20:05

Thanks all. Peace of Mind - that's the origins thing I have, it has helped, as has a bath. Will try a peppermint tea as well.

Need to sleep properly tonight as I have to be up at 6am and drive 8 colleagues to Cambridge. Not sleeping very well at the moment which isn't helping.

camomile tea is good for headaches and restful sleep

Bumperlicious · 31/01/2010 20:55

Thanks Mayor, can't stand camomile unfortunately, but have a valerian tea which should do the trick.

i use "migrastick" from holland and barret it has essential oils in it (lavender and peppermint I think) I rub it all over my forehead and top lip. you would need to check out if its ok to use when pregnant tho cos im not sure

NotAPollyanna · 31/01/2010 21:06

The vast majority of headaches are caused by dehydration. Sometimes just a large glass of water sipped slowly can make a difference.

Bumperlicious · 31/01/2010 21:18

Thanks notapollyanna, I'm quite conscious of that, so usually water is the first thing I try. If it is dehydration should it clear up with water though, or not necessarily?
