How long do you spend brushing your teeth?

Right, its been brought to my attention that I spend 'too long' brushing my teeth.

I've been checking the timer on my toothbrush and its anywhere betweeen 6 nd 9 mins, generally round 8 mins.

Now I realise that they recommend around 2-3 mins and I dont suspect that anyone who brushes for that amount of time hasn't cleaned their teeth properly, but I know my teeth just wouldn't feel clean (I've tried to be quicker)

How long do you brush for? And am I damaging my teeth by brushing for longer?

as long as the toothbrush buzzes - 2 mins I think.

I find just two minutes gives me a very satisfactory result.

2 mins. I've got an electric toothbrush.

8 mins, really?! That is a really long time. Have you tried an electric toothbrush? I love mine. I really miss it on holiday when I use a normal toothbrush as my teeth never feel as clean.

Cyb · 27/01/2010 16:45

Blimey I do mine for about 45 seconds

JeremyVile · 27/01/2010 16:53

The thing is, I dont enjoy doing it, in fact it feels like a big old chore.

And thinking about it, I still feel like I haven't spent long enough.

did your dentist bring it to your attention? And are you guilty of brushing your gums too much (gives one horsey teeth)

rubyslippers · 27/01/2010 17:27

you can damage the gums by over brushing or brushing too vigorously

i brush for 2 - 2.5 mins twice per day

Hulababy · 27/01/2010 17:31

About 2 minutes, followed by mouth wash. Every so often I floss first to.

Hulababy · 27/01/2010 17:33

Too much brusing can cause damage

jalopy · 27/01/2010 18:48

Jeremy, 8 minutes? Not to sound glib but that sounds a bit OCD'sh.

MummyDoIt · 27/01/2010 18:49

As I've just had to have my twice-yearly scrape and polish, clearly not long enough!

JeremyVile · 28/01/2010 14:16

Have inspected for signs of horsey-mouth...tick! Though I think that is my natural look....

Have an electric toothbrush.

I think i'm overcompensating for not flossing - I just cant floss, gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I may have to concede there is some ocd in it... I mean, it doesn't feel that way, to me its very rational, but yes, I sound like a freak!

I decided to be no-nonsense about it this morning and see how long it took... 8 mins 39 secs!

Hmm

if i brushed my teeth that long my gums would be kiling me usually about 2 minutes twice a day and tongue about 10 seconds before i boak

JeremyVile · 28/01/2010 14:32

When I think of the time I'm spending its ridiculous - almost 20 mins a day!
Thats longer than showering, longer than blow drying my hair.

They're not even great teeth ffs!

Why not chew one of those blue disclosing tablets and just brush till all the blue is gone

diddl · 28/01/2010 16:51

I would say about 5 mins a time.

Does anyone else brush three times a day?
