they said it was transient ischemic attack. they did pump me full of blood thinners every day (have a very spotty dotty tummy from all the jabs), and gave me a CT scan of my lung to ensure no blood clots in there, (which was clear, and have said that I will be booked in for more tests when I go back in beginning of march to see the main consultant, but for now to get over what is going on now.

I do know that at one point I did worry them, as when I was taken out of resus (a heart attack victim came in and they needed to work on him), the doc came over, asked me if I knew who he was, who I am, what he was wearing (a red shirt), holding (a pen), what year it was, who was prime minister.....I looked at him while answering the questions very confused, as I could not understand why he was treating me as tho I was stoopid, and then he said that I had had 'a turn', and they were just making sure I was ok now.

I keep thinking back to that now, when I am finding it hard to speak, and it is fretting me.

How scary for you.
The brain is an amazing thing, keep working on the talking, it will get there. Mine was caused by MS, it took about 4 weeks for my speech to recover. I had steriods because I relapsed in October. It's good to go with the flow, there are somethings you can't control to it's easier to go with it and deal with the after effects after IYSWIM. They have some fantastic medication for patients that have had TIA's, they recommend diet changes and exercise, the chances of it happening again are miniscule, roughly the same as for anyone else.

psychomum5 · 28/01/2010 22:29

oh, thats a relief (the chances of it happening again that is). about your being MS cuased, that must be worrying and scary.

I am workingn on the speaking, no worries there, I am not letting it beat me.......DH might get used to the peace, and can;t have that.....I am just getting frustrated and worried that something major has gone on that they have missed. I know that they wouldn;t not have let me out if they were worried, but still........

There's far worse things I could have. Mine's relapsing/remitting so it gets better, I still get nerve damage and scaring on my brain/spinal cord though. I've knackered my chances of being a cardiothoracic surgeon so I'll have to re-think of my masterplan. I'm still training to be a radiographer at the moment so hey ho, I'm just going with the flow.

You are allowed to worry, it's been alot and you are still recovering and adjusting to what's happened. It all takes time. Your body's an amazing thing, when something goes wrong it's designed to fix it or adapt. When they have done some more tests and you have had a chat to them then you will know more. The drug therapies they have now really help. There's a couple of causes to a TIA, one's a blood clot, one's caused by arthrosclerosis (deposits in the arteries) IIRC, the blood clot is really helped by heparin or another blood thinner, honestly, it's amaazing how they can help to prevent any more problems in the future. It's looking good!

psychomum5 · 28/01/2010 22:45

for that very last comment...thanykou for that. actually my GP did say yesterday that my blood gases showed that when I was admitted my blood ph level was 7.65 which is alkaline (tis supposed to be between 7.35 and 7.45 apparently....less than 7.35 would be acidic.......could that also be a cause?? I know the blood gases were also down to the breathing issues too, but you seem to understand quite a lot, which with medical training is understandable.

sorry to hear you masterplan is scuppered tho. am pleased that your MS is the 'good' one tho (if there can be any such thing).

I don't know alot about blood results as they don't teach us biochemistry (bones, CT scans, MRI's, some common health problems). I'd imagine that your body would have sent out it's own clot busters to try and deal with the problem, it needed some extra help though. Blood gasses are related to how acidic/alkaline the blood is, acidosis damages the organs which is all of my knowledge of blood chemistry I'm afraid to say.

I'm sure I'll make a fab GP instead, it will be nice to watch my patients grow up I have hope, I should finish my radiography course first though, darn.

psychomum5 · 28/01/2010 23:03

ah, ok then, thanks anyway

you will make a wonderful GP.....you listen and have a good head on your shoulders, which is (IMVHO), very much essential for being a GP.

Thankyou.

Found it:
respiratory alkalosis is a result of hyperventilation/bleeding. They normally return back to their normal levels.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 28/01/2010 23:33

Your doctors will know so much more then me though, write down all your questions and take them with you, it's easy to forget or get flustered.

psychomum5 · 29/01/2010 07:52

yeah, they did.......bloody hurt tho all the times they took the blood gas.

I think I will take note of your writting everything down when I go. my memory is pants at the moment anyway, let alone trying to think of things when they ask if you have questions. every time they asked that in hospital, I was normally reeling so much from all the drugs, I couldn;t remember my name let alone any questions I had been thinking of!
