Booyhoo · 26/01/2010 12:23

is this normal?

ive never experienced cramping around ovulation before but this month i've had quite painful cramps on and off for 2/3 days. it feels exactly the same as period cramps.

it is normal.

i get it every month.

although, if you don't normally, then it might not be normal, IYSWIM.

Booyhoo · 26/01/2010 12:25

do you think its worth mentioning to the GP?

i hate taking up their time for uneccessary things.

I get this sometimes. I never experienced it before I had DD1, though it came in handy when trying to conceive DD2. Just occasionally it is really painful. In fact I once went to the drs as I was worried it was something serious after several days of paracetemol and codeine to make it bearable. It is called mittelschmerz syndrome (I think) and is due to a small amount of blood being released from the ovary with the egg.

(When ttc DD2 I was standing up chairing a session at a big conference several hundred miles from home when I got a sudden stabbing pain and knew it was time to get home. I can't talk to anyone about the topic of that session now without a little secret smile...Sorry to wander off topic into reminiscence.)

that's a lovely story dotty.

interesting you say you never had it before you had your first child. my periods only started again in November after having ds2 in may.

yep normal but if it's suddenly happened i'd get it checked anyway

Booyhoo · 26/01/2010 12:52

thanks auntmaggie.

My dr seemed to think that it was the kind of thing that might happen occasionally without being anything to worry about, but it might be worth getting it checked out just to make sure. Incidentally, she also said that some women get it every other month as the ovaries alternate (usually) and sometimes it is only one of them that hurts. Fascinating, eh?

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 26/01/2010 13:35

I get it every other month. if you get it is alot its worth getting a scan of your ovaries to check there is nothing untoward.

policywonk · 26/01/2010 13:42

Anything that's a noticeable change in your 'normal' cycle is worth getting checked out.

Don't know what fellow-sufferers reckon, but my ovulation pain doesn't feel like period pain; it's much sharper and in a different place (ie the, er, ovary )

honeybunmum · 26/01/2010 13:43

I also get this (since DC3) I get stabbing pain for a couple of days at the time of ovulation, with also a small amount of blood/mucus. Then it all disappears until I get my period.
I would mention it to your gp, anything that is not normal for you, needs to be checked- you wouldn't want to take a chance and they would not see it as wasting their time.

AuntieMaggie · 28/01/2010 09:35

Yes policy - mine was more stabbing too and could barely walk at times but then it turned out I had severe PCOS in said ovary. Also at first they thought it was too high for my ovary but turns out mine are higher than normal. But then there's nothing normal about my body!

Booyhoo · 28/01/2010 15:06

i'm still getting the cramps. how long do they last for? and theyre still very much like period cramps.

OP posts:
AuntieMaggie · 28/01/2010 15:33

I'd go to your doctor - could be something could be nothing.

Could also be bladder/bowel.

Booyhoo · 28/01/2010 15:44

thanks maggie. i think i'll have to. the more i think about it, it is very unusual for me.

orangina · 28/01/2010 16:02

I get these too, and I have found that the older I get, the worse they get....

(menopause on the horizon emoticon.....)

Booyhoo · 28/01/2010 16:10

i hope its not menopause. i'm 23.

OP posts:
orangina · 28/01/2010 16:15

I'm sure it's not....

(I'm in my 40s!)

anabellapity · 28/01/2010 16:26

it ius normal for some people - though usually with other symptoms too. i know i am in heat as my libido goes through the roof at the same time as the cramping and dh walks around with a huge grin on his face for the next few days . if it's only cramping alone then i would probe further

policywonk · 28/01/2010 16:28

Get thee to the GP woman! They won't examine you there and then - well they might have a feel of your abdomen, but other than that they'll book you in for a proper pelvic exam (you can request a woman GP for this if you'd prefer) and then perhaps refer you to hospital for a scan. I've had all this done and it wasn't scary or horrible, and you feel a lot better for knowing you're dealing with it.

Booyhoo · 28/01/2010 16:31

thanks policy. i will ring in the morning to book. i'll still feel like i'm wasting their time.

I sometimes have ovulation cramps, sometimes not. Sometimes they feel like mild period pains over a couple of days, and sometimes it's a little stabby pain that only happens sporadically over the period of about an hour. Weird.

I have had a pelvic exam recently for something else, and nothing was noticed as being wrong.
