when my baba had the runs (she is 9 months old) i just gave her plenty of water, her formula milk and bland foods, mostly scrambled eggs (nothing fancy incase it upsets her tummy) but i couldnt imagine 3 days without foods - is your doc for real or wha?

Tiggiwinkle · 06/07/2005 23:45

I think the advice to stop foods and milk for "the runs" is outdated now. I am sure I have read that this treatment does nothing to cut the bug short anyway, and would certainly cause great distress for such a long period. I have certainly never heard of it being advised for 3 days. Even when it was standard treatment, it was always 24 hours-although I could never manage even that long that with my DSs!

hi essbee, DD is alot better now. I didn't starve her but she didn't eat much for 24hours think that helped/ She is still doing runny poos but is fine in herself. Thinking it could be her teeth now???

Get some probiotics into her to re-establish her friendly gut bacteria and prevent a temporary lactose intolerance.

mmmmchocolate · 10/07/2005 22:48

what are they?

They are the "live" bits in live yoghurt. However it's best to avoid dairy and buy a powder and mix in with food. I have even found little chewable sweeties with probiotics in. Ask at a health food shop. They are expensive, but no more so than loads of extra nappies, time off work etc.

3 days is far too long for a little baby. Much better to put the healthy bacteria back into her and to go for lactose free milk or add lactase to her normal milk (hard to get but in some health food stores). The Dept Health website will be a lot more up to date than your gp. It is based on medical advise from the leading doctors in the country. So you are following medical advice if you don't starve your child, just following the best advice Fruit juice is too acidic - apple is acidic too - so that won't help.

lunachic · 11/07/2005 07:54

you could try dairy free acidophillous its a dairy free probiotic i give it to my kids after tummy bugs and its great -buy it in health food store and keep in fridge -i give it them by stirring it into porridge

GeorginaA · 11/07/2005 21:59

mmmmchocolate: how is DD now - is she much better? Thinking of you.

pabla · 11/07/2005 22:14

Sorry - i've just seen this - ds2 was prone to tummy upsets - the gp and pharmacist advised that babies can become temporarily lactose-intolerant when they have a tummy bug/runs. I used to buy him SMA LF (lactose free) when this happened and it seemed to help. You can get it from most chemists. Like you, I couldn't see how I could not give ds any milk - even now (16 months) he still has his bottle to settle him at night and when he has naps!

mmmmyummyscummychocolate · 12/07/2005 21:17

Hi DD is alot better but after her bottle first thing inmorning and if she has one during the day has the runs after??? should i try a lactose free milk???

tatt · 13/07/2005 15:21

either lactose reduced milk or lactase or probiotics. They all reduce the burden that lactose places on the system. Hopefully this is just a temporary problem with lactose and she'll be fine soon. Temporary problems with lactose are very common in babies after illness.

pabla · 13/07/2005 22:28

I would try the lactose free for a few days (the tins are small so you would probably use one up within a few days anyway). If it is a temporary thing she should be ok to try with normal formula after that.
