I have been given Diclofenac, Solpadol and Diazepam -all to be taken along side each other!

I'm a bit worried about such a cocktail of drugs.
I have been told I have a prolapsed disc in my back ,hence the prescriptions.
Not keen on lots of meds, especially painkillers. I'm worried about building a reliance on them . Also the problems of not being able to function on them.
Sorry if that sounds confused, but I am concerned.

flossie I've been through all those pills too and am one of the rare people who really did need surgery, and am just out the other side. None of the pills worked well for me apart from the Solpadol for the pain. Diclofenac especially made me sick. Stick with them if you can though, as it sounds like the doctor's trying to calm your back sufficiently to give it a chance to heal, which is a good idea and hopefully will work. But if it doesn't and your GP's not v.helpful there are more devious ways of getting an MRI quickly on the NHS. I was referred by my GP for physio but the waiting list for that alone was six weeks. So I skipped that by going to a private physio for a consult. He refused to treat me after examining me, and did a letter to my doctor saying he was convinced I had a severely slipped disc and that it would be irresponsible to treat me without an MRI. Dr referred me straight away after that, and the physio appointment only cost me £40, so it was money well spent. Might be worth a try. Really hope you're better soon.

Smee - has the surgery helped.

Kaloki · 26/01/2010 12:09

Another one on the same cocktail. This appears to be the standard treatment for back pain. Seems like a lot of diazepam though?

flossie64 · 26/01/2010 12:16

smee - thats very interesting. I do know private physio, so she may be willing to do that for me. I have had treatment for a sports injury in the past from her.
I do feel more positive today, because I have got pain relief and actually can walk a little again, I can see a way forward.
I need to be patient and not be silly about a rapid recovery.

Kaloki- Maybe we should start a club
I'm not sure whats a big or small dose, having never taken anything like this before.
The solpadol is the only thing that seems to be giving pronounced side effects, i.e. nausea, strange vision and a floating feeling.
Surprisingly the Diazepam is only making me a little bit shaky, but that calms down after about 45mins-1hr. I can cope with that .

Maybe you should ask for an alternative to the solpadol. I've been on co-codamol and co-drydamol. Diazepam makes me feel all floaty and spaced.

It's difficult to take it slowly isn't it, I get so frustrated not being able to do simple things like walk!

GothDetective · 26/01/2010 12:32

Solpadol is opiate based so you will get side effects from that, especially if you're sensitive to it.

flossie64 · 26/01/2010 12:35

Solpadol is the same as co-codamol, just another name. My script said co-codamol, but instructions say Solpadol, I take it thats the brand name. I cope with it by only taking 3x a day and only 1 tablet instead of 2. Then when I go to bed I take full dose as I can sleep beunconsious through the symptoms.I say this as I feel knocked out not sleeping IYSWIM.
It is difficult ,and will get more so I expect ,as I improve not to get carried away and do more damage.
Can't believe anyone would want to take these for fun

OP posts:
smee · 26/01/2010 12:46

flossie I used to take the co-codamol to sleep too. It was the only thing that worked. Really glad you're feeling a bit better. Hope it continues.
Goth, thanks for asking. I think it's looking positive, but it's far, far too early to say. I had to have my spine fused in the end as I had no disc left and my whole back was collapsing .

flossie64 · 26/01/2010 13:04

Smee- God here was I feeling sorry for myself, I am nowhere near that point.
I feel very sorry you have had to go through all that. Glad to hear you feel you have a more positive outlook now. TC x

Flossie - I had all 3 of those in the summer for my back - I was like you and not keen on tkaing the diazepam.
However, I'd beent kaing the solpadol anyway and it was ahving no effect. I was so bad I couldn't go to the loo myself. Within 48 hours I was walking fine.

However, I already take sopladol in that dose 4 x a day due to Fibro pain, so was used to it, but it does give me a woozy feeling

Kaloki · 26/01/2010 13:12

Smee that's awful!

It's funny how differently the drugs affect us, when I started taking diclofenac it would knock me out.

smee · 26/01/2010 14:17

Thanks for sympathy . Dicolfenac made me feel icky too.
