I am due to have all 4 wisdom teeth taken out in March as they are impacted and have split the gums and keep getting infected.
My only previous experience with wisdom teeth extraction was my mums.....and they really made a mess of her mouth (though this was 25 years ago).
Im having it done under sedation at my local hospital and they have warned me i may loose the sesation in my lower lip.
What should i expect and am i living in hope i may be up for going to a friends 40th party 6 days later?
TIA.

I had two of my wisdom teeth out at the dentist under local anesthetic

and two out at the hospital under a general anesthetic.

the ones at the dentist were awful and left me amazingly swollen and bruised and took forever to heal, was on mushy food for days and days. besides which I practically had the dentists knee on my chest trying to lever the things out of my mouth. it was brutal!!

whereas the two I had out at the hospital were brilliant, it was day surgery and I was in an out really quickly.
they gave me anti-inflammatories intravenously when they gave me the anesthetic and this worked a treat. Afterwards I was hardly bruised or swollen and was back on proper food about three days later.

Jaqs, why is there pain? Is it that your impacted teeth are getting infected? How many wisdom teeth do you still have in?

I had four impacted teeth, and had the top 2 out but kept the bottom 2 in, as it was the top ones rubbing on the bottom gums that caused the infection. Is it possible you could have the opposing tooth (that wasn't situated close to a nerve) out to reduce future infections and pain?

Or is the tooth being near the nerve which is causing the pain?

When you say you were going under general anaesthetic to have your wisdom teeth out, did you all get the choice of having either gas or injection? Which NHS hospital did you have this done in? I'm guessing that it was somewhere up north!

I had 2 out under local anesthesia and it was fine. I was a bit shaky and swollen that day. I would have struggled on public transport and would also have been dribbling so try get a ride hope if you can. I had Minimal swelling by the next morning and I was ok for work after the second day.
It was fantastic to see the back of the pain I had every time they moved.
I hope it goes well for you!
