I am really worried about my mom.She is 65 and within the last 2-3 years she has been ill on/off.She had gallstones and had the gall bladder removed about 3 years ago.Since then she has had Lichen Planus of the mouth and scalp.Foot parathesis(sp?)Viruses. Chronic hip pain which is worse during the night. She has insomnia on/off.New year she went away and was ill with Food poisioning symptoms since then she has been fatigued.2 weeks ago her the vision in her eye was disturbed. She described it like grey cobwebs hanging in her visual field(optician said it was the macular jelly coming away and would take 3 weeks to disperse)Now the hip pain is radiating down her legs and in her pelvic area. She also has nausea on/off. She has seen different Gp's about the hip pain etc and they have said ti was degeneration of the joint and on fri when she went with the pelvic pain now they say UTII am terrified they are missing something serious like Ovarian or pelvic cancerPlease can anyone help?

has fibromyalgia ever been mentioned?

Beauregard · 23/01/2010 22:58

no never blinks why do you think it could be?

OP posts:
blinks · 23/01/2010 23:26

fibromyalgia is linked to pain, fatigue, sleeping problems, digestion and skin disorders. it can also cause parathesis. symptoms often worse at night.

it's worthy of consideration.

blinks · 23/01/2010 23:32

lichen planus is common to many autoimmune conditions so maybe ask GPs opinion.

lupus etc

blinks · 23/01/2010 23:35

oh and vision changes and/or floaters (which is what it sounds like by your mum's description) is also common with fibromyalgia.

Beauregard · 23/01/2010 23:35

Thankyou blinks i will tell my mom to mention it.
I am just concerned because the hip pain has been on/off for a year and now she is quite a bit of pain and in her pelvic area.I fear the worst
Thankyou for your time

  • Hair loss
  • Headaches
  • Heart palpitations
  • Itchy scalp
  • Memory lapse, difficulty concentrating, transposing numbers and words
  • Numbness and tingling in hands, arms, feet, legs and/or face
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, odors, and/or temperature
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Vision changes and/or floaters
blinks · 23/01/2010 23:37

what checks/tests have they done in regards to the pelvic pain?

blinks · 23/01/2010 23:39

found this among the fibro info-

Some people have urinary complaints, including frequent urination, a strong urge to urinate and pain in the bladder area. Women who have fibromyalgia often have pelvic symptoms, including pelvic pain, painful menstrual periods and painful sexual intercourse.

Beauregard · 23/01/2010 23:50

Re the pelvic pain they did a urine sample and prescribed antibiotics for suspected uti. This was fri and it is no better. It radiates down her legs.
It just seems to be one symptom after another .
Thankyou blinks for your help

OP posts:
blinks · 24/01/2010 00:01

when it comes to GPs you often need to be very proactive and insist on being referred on. you should get the results of the urine test on monday so take it from there.

be firm with them if you're not getting anywhere.

i was misdiagnosed with a chronic condition for over 10 years so i know how frustrating it can be.

Beauregard · 24/01/2010 00:23

Thankyou

Well the GP said no way can it be Fibromyalgia
Her diagnosis was to just prescribe some strong painkillers and told my mom to go back in 2 weeks if it doesnt help and she will consider an xray
I am not happy and cant believe that someone would dole out painkillers prior to investigating the source of the pain.

Any of your mother's multitude of symptoms could be the start of something really serious BUT are most unlikely to be so. Her appetite and weight are completely normal so you can probably rule out anything nasty or cancerous, her other synptoms do not amount to very much apart from the pain which has already been diagnosed as hip pain by several doctors. Despite what you think this is the most likely and reasonable diagnosis and any amount of googling and listening to your well meaning friends will not alter it. Your GP is doing the sensible thing as correctly identifying her pain as the main symptom amongst many others and is trying to see if it changes with strong painkillers. If it does not then the next stage is further investigation looking at the most common and likely causes rather than some half baked idea from the internet. Please try and step back, whatever you think, your GP is right so far.

Beauregard · 26/01/2010 11:02

aliasdictus thankyou for the virtual slap round the face

OP posts:
blinks · 03/02/2010 00:06

i hope alias is right (even though she's a tad snippy) and the stronger painkillers work for her.

and i don't think it's ever wrong to question your GP, no matter what anyone says. i know from personal experience that GPs can get it very wrong and are often ignorant about specific conditions, for example the one that i suffer from- endometriosis. i was told i was imagining it/exaggerating/had pain from piles (?!!)/should just go on the pill and stop worrying (at 16 years old)/was wasting the NHS's money by insisting on exploratory surgery. it was only when i read an article in Cosmo while having an episode of severe pain that i realised it described exactly what i had been experiencing. the pain was so bad i could barely walk and used to pass out.

anyway, not trying to scaremonger, just make sure she goes back if the pills don't work.

all the best.

EcoMouse · 03/02/2010 01:41

I hope alias is right too but she has identified the precise issue with western medicine - it's not holistic!

Many GP's can be all to quick to treat the symptom (symptoms if you're lucky) but quite often fail to seek the root and true cause of those symtoms. Having said that, painkillers are not a treatment! They mask the real issue, that's all.

I and others I know have also experienced a dire lack of thorough investigation and in two cases, life threatening misdiagnosis in the very recent past. So dire that neglect on the part of the GPs involved have been raised by other (western) healthcare professionals, in more than one case.

Pelvic, don't be dissuaded by anyone from seeking full investigations and explanations. The medical establishment is not infallible, no matter how much they would prefer patients to think they are.

blinks · 03/02/2010 09:28

absolutely ecomouse, absolutely.

Beauregard · 05/02/2010 21:38

Thankyou for the replies
Only just checked

My mom says that the painkillers have kicked in and are helping(thankfully)I will still push her to find out the reason for her pain though.

Blinks i have the same condition and was also fobbed off with various things despite me having textbook symtoms for years.
I do have a lack of faith in GP's .Not out of lack of respect for the difficult job they do but because i know of so many people whom have been fobbed off or misdiagnosed.I think it is good to question anything.

bartholomina · 05/02/2010 23:49

For what it's worth if she is having pain in her hip at night that is waking her up she probably should have an x-ray (+/- calcium levels and inflammatory markers) - although common things being common it's hopefully wear and tear and nothing more than that.
