About 14 months ago I started to have very itchy scalp, sort of burning+tingling. Its worse at the front just near my forehead. my hair falls out a bit right at the front and there's this white sheath along the hair(pretty sure its not the root), and when I scratch my head, I get this white grain sand sized stuff, I have no idea what it is
definately not simple dandruff, MIL has that and this is completely different and not flakey. I also have bumps(like spots?) along the back of my hairline nr my neck, these tend to sometimes flare up, and other times be barely noticable.

When I run my nail along my scalp i get a white substance under my nail-this happens everytime, regardless of if Ive just washed my hair or not.

Doctor thinks its headlice, Im totally unconvinced-for a start there isnt and hasnt been any lice. The children havent got headlice, nor has dp. Dr has given me headlice shampoo but Im abit cautious that it may make it alot worse.

Anyone had a similar problem? Im at a complete loss after trawling google for hours and hours and not finding anything similar.

Sounds like some form of excema maybe.Have you tried t-gel or using polytar shampoo?

I get a similar thing,I don't have definate flakes but a white build up on my scalp.
I use t-gel and it does clear it up.

The only thing Ive tried so far is nitrozal, which seemed to help reduce the white substance on the scalp, but not the burning/itching or the white sheath thingies.

I do wonder if its anything to do with hhaving my hair dyed at a salon for the first time about 16 months ago. I had no problems whatsoever with my scalp before then.

Its highly embarassing, it DOES look like i have headlice when you look at the the top oof my head and round by my ears-but how could that be so without visable lice? I have had headlice in the past and combing through and also vigerously brushing hair over the bath would make it very obvious as they would fall out. Ive been cobing my hair and brushing as above but nothing-it just makes my scalp more itching/sore.

argggh

sounds like a form of psorisis to me.... go back to your GP

Fleecy · 29/01/2010 12:23

I have this but Nizoral does fix it. I find it's worse when tired or stressed.

I'd agree, go back to your Dr, tell him medicated shampoo isn't working and that it's not lice and ask for some further help.

Good luck!

do you get athletes foot? or fungal problems with your feet?

Hulababy · 29/01/2010 13:13

Scalp psorasis?

I have scalop psorasis and it means white bumpy skin over my scalp where it is affected. It is very itchy. At times it can get quite sore too. It flakes a lot - looks like a bad case of dandruff on my clothes or seats which can be very embarrasing at times. luckily most family and friends are aware and never make me feel akward about it.

GP can prescribe various creams and lotions.

I haven't found any that sort mine out TBH but have tried a fair few. i use T Gel shampoo which helps control it, although not get rid of it.

I was about to suggest scalp psoriasis too. Mine is in full snowfall at the moment.

I have periods of having a very itchy scalp with chunks (not small dandruffy flakes) and the grains (just like nit eggs) coming off at the front, also have the bumps around the hairline and down behind/ under the ears along my neck. I've never had a diagnosis as the bumps come and goes, I suspect it might be hormonal.

Anyway, t-gel really works for my head. It smells bad and is expensive, but nothing else seems to work.

I have scalp psorisis, and after 5 years i insisted my GP refer me to a dermotologist.

Resulting in 2 fantastic treatments which I use at home - which are smelly, and a faff, but I only do it about once every 6 weeks and I am free of manky head and my hair no longer falls out, and I can wear black clothes and have my hair cut without breaking out in a cold sweat

Sounds like Psorisis.
Had same problem about year ago.
No apparent reason why you get it altough some people believe it can be linked to stress.
I went to my GP who prescribed a specific shampoo; you put little bit on affected area and rub in. Leave for 10 minutes then wash hair as normal.
Recommend you get it checked by your GP and not just buy an 'off the shelf' product because if you misdiagnos your problem could get worse!
Hope you get it sorted.
