Hi, very quickly, my brother has just rung me, very upset, to say his six year old DS got accidentally tripped up by another boy at school today and lost his front tooth. The supply teacher was very busy at the end of the day and mumbled a brief explanation and my brother's DS said he'd been told to wash out his mouth with water and they kept his tooth. Should he not have seen a first aider? Should he have come home with an accident form? It all seems very vague - would #my brother be unreasonable to ask to see he head? Thx

Why so urgent?

How strange.

Was it a baby tooth or an adult tooth ?

TBH a first aider couldn't have done anything other than stem the bleeding which i imagine they did anyway.

If it is a baby tooth it is likely to be replaced very soon anyway.

If he is worried he should make an apt to see his dentist just to check it has all come out. However if he has tooth i am presuming it has been clean knocked out ?

Not sure what the head could do ? Although i would agree maybe the school could have phoned you to let you know at the time what had happened.

Was it a baby tooth? Was it already loose?

If so, then there is not much to do, but I think a little note would have been good, and certainly something entered in the school's accident book (which the parent wouldn't see).

If it is a permanent tooth, then obviously it should be dealt with urgently with the DC getting to the dentist with the tooth suitably protected.

I really don't think a first aider would have been to do anything useful. I would also imagine that the majority of staff in school are first aiders, so he probably did see one - but no first aid would have been necessary unless it was an adult tooth (and then they would rush him to your dentist via you). First aiders are just there to stop any harm from getting worse. They don't actually treat or solve anything.

6 year old is the age for teeth falling out. It happened to you and me and will happen to our DCs.

bruxeur - not strange, it's just that my brother needed some advice before he goes on night duty for his job - that's all. Do you have any advice? Lilyloo, it was a baby tooth. Yes, I think my brother thought he at least deserved a phone call to give him the option of taking him to the dentist. My sisterin law is a dental hygienist and has since spoken to me and said it would have been advisable to take him to have it checked out...I think the reason my brother wants to see head is that a) he's not happy that my nephew was left to deal with it on his own - he was told to go off and wash his mouth out - was very upset -noone accompanied him... and he is not happy with the lack of communication about what happened (very sketchy/vague). The teacher should have at least offered to speak to him tomorrow? Thanks for advice, Blue, am aware of responsibilities of first aiders - yes, they do treat things as WELL as stop things getting worse (I am one)! and yes, I know when children lose their teeth, but it's still upsetting for a parent to have it happen under these circumstances. Thank you for advice - will get my brother to log on and look!!
