seriously, esp in week before hand, will come down with any virus going. as well as the monthly migraine. uggh. is it something hormonally that makes you more vulnerable. or is it just me????!

Tide, not just you, I often get mouth ulcers & cold symptoms before my period, i think my immune system is weak at that point. ?don't know why.

bentneckwine1 · 23/01/2010 00:02

My asthma gets worse in the week before my period and I need to use my reliever inhaler through the night. The asthma nurse said there is some research to suggest a link between the two in some patients.

As my gran would say...'what we women have to put up with'...!

rabbitstew · 23/01/2010 11:13

I think there is definitely a connection between periods and increased risk of getting ill. I always groan inwardly if my children get a cold near the time of my period because it more or less guarantees I'll get it off them.

tide · 23/01/2010 11:24

glad it's not just me, though not glad for you, if you see what I mean.

really should make allowances for this pattern by now, but live in hope.

wonder if dosing up on vit c would help...

I used to get ulcers before and during my period. I haven't for a while as I had Implanon implant in my arm and periods are not as severe as they were.

I also lost some weight and take multi-vits every day now. I feel much better for it. Still get sore swollen boobs though, anyone got tips for that?

AnAuntieNotAMum · 23/01/2010 13:53

I used to get cold sores regularly before my period. I was told this is because a woman's immune system drops before a period as the body needs the least protection as there is no pregnancy and if your immune system isn't in the best state to start with, you become very susceptible at this time. I don't know about that, but I have certainly found that taking a supplement such as magnesium OK that helps keep up B6, B12 and magnesium levels month round helps.

tide · 23/01/2010 14:59

Right that's it, I'm digging out the Mag OK. Thankyou.
(don't think our immune systems have worked out that we might have children outside our bodies to deal with also!)

There is probably a nutritional connection. Menstruation puts a big strain on your body's iron stores for one thing. Low iron (even when it's not out and out anaemia) is enough to lead to feelings of fatigue and also means your immune system is more vulnerable.

I'd suggest that you make a real effort to increase the nutritional content of your diet paying particular attention to iron-rich and vitamin C-rich foods such as kiwifruit & citrus. (Orange juice with breakfast and a kiwifruit after lunch and supper, perhaps.) The body needs vitamin C in order to repair and also to absorb the iron from food. Irnn-rich foods would include fortified breakfast cereals, wholegrain foods, whole eggs, red meats, dark green vegetables. B vitamins are also vital for the immune system... again from wholegrain foods, meats etc. A multivitamin with iron could be a good safety-net if you suspect your diet is not up to scratch

Good luck

thankk's for that chil. Am already pretty good on the whole foods, fresh veg thing. but I suspect my body is still knackered after three kids in a row, and I'm not so young now. also have a low thyroid issue. Anyway, health kick here I come. rather that than give up taking the kids swimming (which is always where I seem to catch any virus going)

Thought I should share: just went to doctor with the 5 day headache, and she said the hormonal changes before a period can really affect the sinuses, just like pregnancy (I had terrible stuffy nose when pregnant). suggested taking antihistamine pre-period to prevent sinuses flaring up and making colds etc more likely. Took my hayfever nose drop etc and headache went!! fantastic

I was diagnosed of herpes 4 years ago, the doctor said there are no possible cure for the virus. But i never gave up hope of getting cured. i have been living with it taking acyclovir to prevent outbreaks. we later discovered that my wife was effected too, i felt so bad and started searching the internet for a cure, and found people talking about getting cured by Dr. Bulukona herbal medicine. I contacted him through his website: bulukonasolutionstemple.webs.com, he called me and we talked on phone and i discovered he was genuine. But i was still a little skeptical about it, my wife felt ok with it and we gave it a try and got the medicine from him, took it according to the dosage. After 3 weeks my wife went for check up and she was completely cured, we both went together for my test and doctor said the virus was completely gone. It was amazing, a thing of joy. Dr Bulukona herbs medicine is capable of curing HSV 1 and 2 completely. contact him today Email: [email protected]
