wisdom tooth agony - advice needed please!

Can anyone offer me any advice?

I have 2 impacted wisdom teeth that need to be extracted. Had appointment on Monday at hospital where this was confirmed, and I have been given an appointment in June to have them out.

I just don't know how I'm going to last that long. Just finished second course of a biotics and taking max doses of ibuprofen, and it's not touching the pain. Not sure it can be infected again so quickly. The dentist said that the top wisdom tooth is damaging the bottom one, and this was probably responsible for the 'discomfort'.

Should I ring hospital and ask to put myself on cancellation list (is there such a thing)? Does anyone know how much it costs to have done privately (not really an option, but am desperate). What is the most effective pain killer? Can a doctor prescribe something really strong, or does it have to be my dentist? Will I do something horrible to my insides if I take ibuprofen for 5 months?

Sorry, loads of questions but I'm a mass of gibbering pain and don't know what to do.

thanks in advance.

i had a wisdom tooth out private, i rang a different dentist and was seen in a week.

it cost me £200 to have tooth out and then £30 to have a more detailed x ray than what the nhs did, this also showed no other treatment was needed, also i was gagging when the nhs tried to do an xray, but the one i had private and is now our new dentist(nhs now) was so much easier, i had no plate in my mouth at all.

thanks pinkkoala. did you have local anaesthetic, and did it go OK
Might be a stupid question, but do you think it's £200 per tooth or for the procedure itself?

I think it is definitely worth trying to get on a cancellation list and checking out the private options if you could afford it.

I know how painful impaxted wisdom teeth are as I had them too. I suffered for weeks with it and had to be on really strong painkillers that made me feel sick. When I got to hospital I met a girl in for the same operation, who had no pain, but had only been waiting a week for the op and it did make me wonder if it all depends on how pushy your dentist is. This was 25 years ago so I would think the system is much changed by now but might it be worth seeing if your dentist could push for your op earlier as you are in bad pain and having repeated infections.

I'd go back to the dentist and ask if they can ask for a more urgent appointment for you.

thanks. My dentist sort of gave me the impression that once I'd been referred to the hospital, that was when his input stopped. Worth a try though.

ALso your GP IS the best person to get painkillers from, not your dentist.

longingfor sleep- i have a terrible fear of the dentist and had to get some diazepam from my doctor and also the new dentist always uses a numbing gel before giving the local, if they don't mention it ask them. I can honestly say i barely felt it.

the whole thing went better than i thought as i was dreading it, i have never had any other dental work so this was a big thing for me.

i took my husband with me who sat in the room the whole time.

i had heard so many horror stories about having wisdom teeth out, but don't listen to any of them.

take an ipod to distract you, i did.
