Remedies for teen PMT

I'm usre this has been done to death, but...

DD1 16 has recently, since September, developed quite severe PMT. Not pain, but exhaustion, nausea, headaches - I originally thought it was a virus/es, but it's very clearly linked to her periods.

This month it started Sunday night, when she was sobbing and inconsolable because her sister had inadvertently worn a bra of hers, that was my first suspicion!

Anyway she's had the past two days off school, got up this morning, but went back to bed and sometime between bed last night and this morning she came on.

Anyways, what should I be doing to help her, if nothing else, this really not the time to be having to lose three days a month at school.

Any ideas, please?

I had awful problems with PMT almost from my first period.

Tried quite a lot of things bu what finally worked for me was progesterone treatment. Quite controversal I think.

However before I got to the stage of needing medication there was a lot I improved with diet and supplements.
Cutting out sugar and keeping my blood sugar balanced was vital so eating litle and often.

Have you tried the NAPS website they may help

Good luck I do know what a bore it is and how it can really interfere with daily living.

There's a herb called agnus castus which is used to regulate hormones.

I used it when I was at school because I was taking days off everytime I had my period. I used it again recently because my periods were very heavy since having kids. I would say it definitely worked for me this time, not so sure about when I was younger, but I think perhaps I was just less aware of my body then.

Definitely worth a try before using something more drastic

Calcium, magnesium and Vit B6 all helped my awful PMS. I try to eat lots of foods with them in all month round and then take a supplement for about 2 weeks (start about 10 days before period due)

Thank you all, on behalf of DD. I will investigate the links and invest in some agnus castus, particularly if it helps with heavy periods - me this time

Also if you're into homeopathy I found pulsatilla 30c very useful. Agree re:diet. Starflower capsules are very good too and not too expensive.

It really has made a massive difference for me. My periods were lasting about 8days, nd was heavy for 7 those, to the point where i would have to change a super tampon every 2hours for the whole week. i started taking agnus castus a couple of months ago. the first period i had less pmt, wasn't ahouting at everyone as much! The second period only lasted 6days and was only heavy for 2 of those.

Good luck, hope you find solution.

Evening primrose oil has helped my DD (14). It's also worked wonders for her skin and therefore her mood!

crankytwanky · 22/01/2010 11:27

I tried VitB6 and evening primrose oil as a teenager.
And Bach remedies.
Worked a bit IIRC, but my heart goes out to you.
