MMR booster time

grumpygriselda · 05/07/2005 15:52

now arranging for 14 month old dd to have single mmr jabs and realise ds (age 4) due his boosters so presume boosters can be just as risky (if you are of that mindset, as i am) as first doses. In which case, I need to arrange his singles don't i? any thoughts by those with experience/better knowledge?

You can pay for a test to check his immunity and therefore whether he needs a booster.

grumpygriselda · 05/07/2005 15:56

what, for each disease? where? does that mean boosters aren't always necessary?

ds is due his pre-school boosters too. He needs mmr + diptheria, tetanus, pertussis and polio.
He was supposed to have them last week but the nurse agreed with me that his reaction to the mmr may come up after the 10 day 'incubation period', just as dh and I were going away for the first time on our own...
I am pro vacs but even I am a bit nervous about him having so many in one go.

grumpygriselda · 05/07/2005 16:04

gosh cupcakes, that does sound a lot. don't blame you for putting it off.

Cupcakes, you don't have to give them all in one go. DS1 had his preschool DPT plus polio when he was 5 and I plan on taking him for his MMR this year. I plan on splitting DS2s boosters up int his way too.

cupcakes · 05/07/2005 18:00

just discussed this with dh and we are going split his appointments up at the surgery.

kid · 05/07/2005 18:11

Thats reminded me, I am meant to be making an appointment for DS. I hate injections

grumpygriselda · 05/07/2005 20:43

Sorry to go on, but anyone gone through the single jab process and then repeated it for boosters? Or is this just the norm ie that you just do it all again at age 4-5?

I was under the impression that the singles are more likely to give ongoing immunity and it was worth having the blood test to see if you need anything at all.

Angeliz · 06/07/2005 12:12

My dd had single jabs and has not actually had any boosters yet.
She's just had her first mumps due to the shortage. (she's 4)

She had a blood test about a year ago to see if she neded any boosters and she does need them all apart from rubella . (Which i actually found rather shocking as they say that the boosters are just to get that 5%(i think) who aren't yet immune from the first jabs. )

Don't know when or if she'll have measles booster!

Weatherwax · 06/07/2005 13:25

Having been convinced by the pro MMR lobby dd1 had MMR first but by the tim dd2 came along I decided that she wasn't going to have the mmr and therefore dd1 has had single boosters at the same time as dd2 had her injections. Dd2, now 4, is still waiting for the mumps which I blame on the government but has had a measeles booster.

DD1 had to have a blood test recently and I would say its easier to give the booster just in case than it is to get blood out of her! It took two nurses and two dr's to get a sample to tell them she didn't have anemia, something her Dr knew as soon as he saw her but as the school had said she looked very white he organised it for their benefit!

grumpygriselda · 06/07/2005 16:32

thank you Chuffed, Angeliz and Weatherwax. Weatherwax, I agree, hadn't thought of the actual process in blood test. Think I'll just get him single boosters without testing. But can I just say that I've even had to convince the receptionist at the private clinic that i really do want singles ("all my children had the MMR"). Hope we're wrong and MMR is safe though as Blair couldn't lead by example I'm putting my dosh where my usually uncynical mouth is.

we had the singles and I am pleased that we did. The doctors and everybody at the clinic were nice, professional and we were give all the correct information (the nhs didnt give us amy info for his baby jabs) and we got give the packets that each of the jabs came in!
We traveled 3 hours EACH WAY to get to the clinic we chose (and obviously did that 3 different times) Dont regret it at all.
Even my doctor was supportive. Do what you think is best.
I am going to have the blood test when he is going to school to see if we need to top him up!

Angeliz...where did u manage to get mumps vac? We went singles route for DS but can't get mumps.
