Giant Baby fear. Would you be worried?

DS4 is five months old (23 weeks) and weighs over 24 lbs (11kg). He's way off the graph. He's fully breastfed and I haven't started solids yet.
If these graphs are to be believed, surely he's a freak.
HV says I should check it out with Doc.
Any other big babies out there?

Thanks Aragon and Lizzie. I feel better now.

talking about heads - DS2 has a huge head. His head measured 39.5cms at birth and is now the size of an average 2 year old.

spidermama · 05/07/2005 14:31

Ouch Dejags!

and we were wondering why it took so long to push him out . Four hour labour from start to finish, I pushed for 1hr20 minutes of that.

Miraculously I didn't tear.

Fimbo · 05/07/2005 14:33

My ds's head is big as well - I can't seem to find a childs bike helmet to fit him.

spidermama · 05/07/2005 14:35

Oooooh Dejags. My ds2 was a big header. I did tear though. Still wince thining about it. You did well!

I went into clinic proud, but came out worried. Typical!
A bit reassured now. Ahhhhh! He looks comical because he's busting out of 9-12 month clothes yet still has a wobbly, daft 5 month-old expression. Just gorgeous I swear!

Again Ds1 was a large baby, but came back into proportion once he was on the move. However it is worth getting him checked out, if only to reassure you. It is possible to overfeed some babies, though the underlying syndromes tend to be rare as far as I am aware.

Hi Spidermama. My ds3 is 6 months old and last weigh in (2 weeks ago) he was 21lb 7oz. He is on the 98th centile for both height and weight and yes he is big. But I don't worry. Like you say about your little man, he is in proportion. He has his chub, but I'd much rather have healthy chubby babies than skinny waif-like ones!!

He was only 7lb 12oz at birth and I only started weaning him at just over 5 months, so I don't feel he is big due to overfeeding.

He is just gorgeous! And so incredibly good. He has a smile for everyone (even newsreaders on the tv - lol) and sleeps through the night. He is soooo placid. I wouldn't want him to be any different.

The thing that annoys me is everyone elses comments when they see him, especially the MIL. My SIL has a 16 month old who is on the 9th centile for height and weight, so there really isn't much between him and my ds. But they said that ds2 who is now 2 was enormous.(A slight over reaction I feel) He was quite a big baby, not as big as ds3 is, but not small either and now he is so skinny and definately not the tallest 2 year old (that may have something to do with him being very fussy about food though ) It just feels like they are criticising him in some way every time they mention it.

Your little man sounds absolutely gorgeous to me and I wouldn't worry about him. Get him checked out if it still worries you by all means, but I bet there is nothing wrong there.

Ooh I just love gorgeous little chubby babies In fact I'm gonna go and give my little bundle of chub a kiss right now!!!

spidermama · 05/07/2005 23:31

Ahhhhh! Flum, I do too. I just adore his big fat knees and baseball cheeks. Like yours, mine also smiles at everyone. His whole face opens up. It's absolutley gorgeous and he has me gushing like a lunatic every single day. What an absolute joy! Gush over (but will continue in private with Giant baby)

Spidermama,sounds fine to me..
Bloody charts hey? We worry about them being too small, then too big.....

(Hey it was you talking about unassisted birth wasn't it? Mears did a link ages ago to a book of birth stories that Zebra featured in. There was a woman relating her experience of this. Far out!!
I have heard you mention acertain m/w too with fairly radical views? What is her name and the title of her book?

Just intrigued by the whole thing. Not that I am planning any more babies, unassisted or otherwise.
Can I also say that you are a charming addition to MN??????

spidermama · 05/07/2005 23:39

Ahhhhh thanks MD. Always nervous about peeeeing people off so that's nice of you to say.
Was the midwife Ina May Gaskin? I think she's a gifted woman.

moondog · 05/07/2005 23:40

That's the one!

(P*Ing people off??? How so????? Isn't that one of the fun things about MN?????
I'm terribly diplomatic in RL. My alter ego unleashes itself in the twilight zone.)

spidermama · 05/07/2005 23:41

She wrote Spiritual Midwifery back in the 70s which is a bit dated now ... but a fantastic updated version. Can't remember the name as have farmed out my two copies to pregnant friends.

I love ds3's chubby little wrists, they are just so lovely, and his snuggly neck...oooh I could go on all night. Anyway, really mustn't go on all night or I will never cope with school run, toddler and baby tomorrow!!
Night night.

moondog · 05/07/2005 23:44

I'll do a bit of research. Cheers!

didn't mean to worry you spidermama

my ds 1 was a 9lb er and enormous until he started moving. He's a big solid nugget now at 4 but ds2 was same birthweight and is 11.25k at 22 months and both BF for ages. So you never know, but the doc could put your mind at rest

Skribble · 11/07/2005 22:39

My Ds was 11lb7oz but was all in proportion, he was at the top of the charts right through babyhood. He went through a very chubby stage before he started walking. He is now a very tall slim 8yr old.

vickiyumyum · 11/07/2005 22:43

you never can tell. my ds1 was 10lb4oz at birth and wa always on the 95th centile up to about 17months old, but now he is 8 and is one of th skinniest in his class and about average height, no one ever beleives me when i say how much he weighed when he was born.
whereas ds2 was 10lb6oz and is now three he is very tall and of average build not skinny and not fat, but becaus eof his height he wears age 5-6 clothes and has to have belts on his trousers and shorts.

misdee · 11/07/2005 22:43

at 24 weeks dd2 was bordering on the 99.8th percentile line. at the next time ihad her weighed (42weeks according to the book) she was way above the line. at 20 weeks she was above the lines for her height.

janeybops · 11/07/2005 23:22

go to GP and put your mind at rest, then enjoy your baby! My ds is a big one too and is just adorable (but then I am biased).

Above 98th centile at birth and now on 91st at 20 months so they do change!
