poor DD's under eye circles and shadows

Does anybody else's DC have under eye shadows? My daughter is now 4 and when she wakes up her eyes are puffy like eggs and swollen and the shadows under her eyes are almost purple. The shadows stay there all day but the puffiness goes.

Can anybody suggest what causes this?

She has a fairly good diet, eats fruit and veg regularly (especially brocolli), exercises twice a week, we walk 20 mins to school and back every day and she also sleeps about 10 hours, also takes a chewy multivitamin at night.

My daughter tends to have really dark circles. She also has a good diet and sleeps enough. Sorry, I am not much help...

I've got dark circles which are heriditary (nan, mum, aunt, sister). No reason for them & nothing to worry about. Used to spend a fortune on different concealers to try & hide them but don't bother these days. Oddly they only seem to affect the female side of my family. My niece is 4 & has them whereas ds1 is also 4 & doesn't & neither do any other males in my family. Not sure that's of any help mind you

It can be due to allergies - they're called allergic shiners.

But not always, I do think some kids just have them naturally and not for any health-related reason.

HinnyPet · 18/01/2010 22:20

Allergic shiners?? That's worth googling, thank you very much!

Try dropping dairy for a week.

Fruitysunshine · 19/01/2010 01:05

Hi ya

My DD(9) has suffered for years with this and also greyness around her mouth - I put it down to tiredness...she has a good diet and is quite active.

TheLemur · 19/01/2010 15:09

My DS (2) had this a few weeks after he went into a big bed. It took me a while to click that he was allergic to the bedding as I hadn't washed it before I put it on his bed (bad mummy).

When I twigged it all dropped into place... he was snoring really loudly in his new bed as he can't have been able to breath through his nose as his sinuses were swollen.

As it happens for your DD in the morning it could be something bed related? Maybe a dust mite allergy? Might be worth washing everything at 60 and/or getting some hypo allergenic pillow covers etc

HinnyPet · 19/01/2010 21:18

Thank you Thelemur.
That would make sense, as it started when she got her big bed.
I do wash her bedding at 60 in non-bio but I don't have hypo allergenic pillow covers. The pillow was hypoallergenic one from Mothercare but her covers are not..I will look for some covers, good idea....she doesn't snore though.

Have realised that she is awake with nightmares/night terrors every morning at 5am so perhaps this could be contributing to it!!

my DD is nearly 3 and has dark circles. She sleeps and eats very well indeed. I wonder is you DD very fair? Mine is, and I have always attributed her dark circles to having extremely fair skin.

HinnyPet · 19/01/2010 21:35

Hi Stan, thanks for reply, no she's not particularly pale skinned, she has my mousy hair with blonde ringlets on the end from baby hair and kind of english rose type skin. She is beautiful, of course! but am wondering if I should take her to GPs, though I will try the hypo allergenic pillows first.
