cervical erosion

My GP is sending me to the hospital as an outpatient and says the consultant will probably use a laser to treat a cervical erosion. I have had this apparently since childbirth (obviously cannot see it myself!) and GP has been monitoring it for over a year. I did not want to have anything done, but now my GP says I should not really leave it and should not have to put up with the nuisance (not painful but discharge and irregular bleeding). My smears have always been normal. I am a bit scared and worried. Has anyone had this treatment? Could it affect fertility if I do or don't have it treated?

I've not had the treatment myself or anything but recently at my last smear the nurse 'observed' I had an erosion on my cervix & I am awaiting to see the gp about it. I was quite alarmed & kept asking about it as I didn't fully understand the implications myself or its cause. She explained it was just one of those things & the laser treatment just 'reseals' the outer tissue...bit like soldering. She even went on to explain that she herself had had it happen & treated 3 times in her lifetime. I asked if it affected anything in anyway & she told me it affects nothing at all, sex, conception, pregnancy & childbirth were all straight forward for her. Hope this helps.

I had this (erosion) and my Practice Nurse sealed it with some freezing concoction at the surgery. Maybe mine wasn't so bad as it has never come back.

Thanks Dixie and serafina. I do feel better and understand why the gp has been so laidback, as it probably really is not a big deal.
