Bug or Gallstones? (possibly tmi!)

Two or three times over the past couple of years, I have woken in the night (usually after eating a curry) with bad pain under ribs on the right, also right shoulder area. It has been agonising but has passed over an hour or two and life has gone on. Last summer (July) what I initially thought was the same happened one night, pain in same sort of area but it lasted much longer and I was very, very sick. Eased up during the next morning and I was fine. I had had a fish and chip dinner on this occasion at an unknown restaurant and wasn't sure whether it was more likely to be food poisoning. Saturday night (after a curry), I woke up with pain under ribs on right again. This got worse and worse during the night and I was sick more times than I want to remember. This eased up during the morning but I have taken longer to get over it which makes me wonder whether it was a bug. The following morning I woke up with a stinking headache although this passed off after going back to bed with strong painkillers. Yesterday I was OKish but very tired and today I would say I am 95% back to normal. So my question is, do you think this changing pattern with "add ons" is likely to be gallstones or just coincidence and this time, anyway, a nasty bug. Having a friend who has just had winter vomiting disorder, our symptoms have been pretty similar!

I'd think the curry/chips link is more than coincidence! Never had gallstones, but does sound very gallbladder/liverish to me...I'd go to the GP and say just what you've posted, myself.

You don't normally get a pain under your ribs with a stomach bug or food poisoning and as this has now happened to you several times, I would suggest GP. Also, ime, with both stomach bug and food poisoning you also get diahorrea and the actual instances of vomiting are say 3 or 4 times, not "more times than I care to remember". I think its worth asking GP to examine further.

I agree, see the GP - have to say, I'm not usually sick with a gallstones attack but everyone's different.

And my pain is centred behind the breastbone but I know for some people the back is affected.

Horribly painful - you have my sympathy.

You sound like me a few years ago. For me it was gallstones and I left it so long I ended up being a med emergency! Defo a docs visits

alypaly · 13/01/2010 13:34

that is a classic symptom of gallstones having the pain in the right shoulder. There is a nerve that connects from the gall bladder. I had mine removed earleier this year and one of my symptoms was pain up to the r shoulder.
Dont let them tell you its IBS or tummy upse, its classic

alypaly · 13/01/2010 13:38

i was an emergency like Pheebe as the 'doctors' kept telling me it was IBS for 3 years and then i collapsed with what i thought was a heart attack, vomting, shaking, excrutiating pain, diarrhoea, bloated belly.

be careful what you eat at the moment and do a gallstone diet avoid fat and too much sugar incase there is a problem with pancreas which is only an inch away from it.www.gallbladderattack.com/gallbladderdiet.shtml

fish and chips is very fatty so was probably a trigger for the attack. Ask for an ultrasound

chocaholic73 · 14/01/2010 09:48

yes ...thanks all ...just needed a push really. It's easy once you're more or less back to normal to ignore it ...until it happens again. I have made an appointment with my gp for tomorrow afternoon.
