Need dental advice please!

I have a large amalgam filling in a top molar at the back.

My dentist says it needs replacing but as it is so large he wants to do an 'onlay' (or possibly an inlay, I forget!) which will cost £400+.

I baulked at the cost especially as I thought composite white fillings these days were strong. He reckons it wouldn't last.

Should I risk just having an ordinary white filling or should I just cough up and have the onlay/inlay?

Difficult to comment as I am not a dentist, but I had an inlay done a few years ago and it did not last long at all - I was not pleased. I suggest you ask the dentist how long it is expected to last.

Hi, composites are not strong enough for large posterior fillings, you should ask for a price for a pinned amalgam if you want a cheaper alternative.
