What is it in home made and shop bought bread that my body doesn't like?

I have been tested for coeliac disease and that came back negative but within seconds of finishing a slice of home made bread toasted I need the bathroom. Blooming annoying.

perhaps yeast?

or maybe you are intolerant of wheat, (not allergic to it or coelic)

OrmIrian · 11/01/2010 17:00

Wheat. IME the intolerance comes and goes. If I am under stress it flares up badly.

Has it always been like this?

nightcat · 11/01/2010 17:41

there is a very wide range of gluten reactions, you might be gluten-sensitive rather than celiac (celiac is a tip of the gluten-iceberg) - check out celiac.com (it covers the whole spectrum)

I have noticed that I feel dreadful after eating some shop bought bread - we only have wholemeal and kingsmill seems to be ok in small doses. DH bough m and s bread during the snow famine last week and i feel so awful after eating just a half slice, so bloated and sick. I have been trying to decide what it is in the m and s loaf which is so different!

Sometimes I am fine and other times not. Had a problem eating a home made mince pie this morning. Home made pastry and mincemeat so no clue what is going on. Have just bought some gluten and wheat free bread to try.

fab - just try doing without all wheat products for a while. Incl pastry And see if it makes a difference. I noticed a change within a few days.

MaryMungo · 12/01/2010 11:55

Did you abstain from gluten before the test? That can affect results.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 12/01/2010 12:01

I can't live without toast and pies though.

I did start eating normally again before the test but don't know if it was enough.

I am about to have some pasta and pesto for lunch, will see what happens.

Just tried my new bread which was lovely with the seeds in it but my body doesn't like that either. Dh thinks that means I have a problem with yeast. Does that sound right and what can I do? Soup without bread or toast is just sad.

Was the pasta OK?

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 13/01/2010 10:03

I can't remember to be honest but I think so.

I might have pasta for lunch so we will see today.

Pasta was worse for me than bread. So I am wondering if it isn't wheat at all.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 13/01/2010 11:13

The bread I had was wheat free and I still had a problem.

Hi Fab - I think you would need to be eating gluten for about 6 weeks before the blood test. My husband is coealiac but MIL tested neg because she had already given up gluten and couldn't bear the side-effects of going back on, just to get a positive diagnosis. Worth getting a second opinion as not all gps are very clued up about coealiac. If you get a positive test you can get staple gluten free foods on prescription.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 13/01/2010 11:15

I definitely wasn't on it for 6 weeks. The GP I saw is lovely so I will consider going back for another test. I have a lot going on atm so need to prioritise really. Thanks.
