Untrue NHS Measles ad recommending MMR

I've never posted before but was so incensed so here goes !
On page 10 of The Times WEEKEND mag 09.01.10 the NHS ( www.nhs.uk/mmr) have taken out an ad explaining about measles and it's effects.
In the section " How can I avoid it ? "
"There is a simple way to protect yourself against measles: get the MMR jab. It is the only effective way to prevent measles."

This is factually incorrect and very misleading for new mums seeking unbiased information.
I have written to the Advertising Standards Authority but wondered what else I could do ?

Chief Medical Officer? It's Liam Donaldson - have a look at the Dept. of Health website.

Or Andy Burnham, secretary of state for health - contact your MP and ask him/her to take it up with AB.

You are right to question 'only' effective way given that there are single measles jabs available.

Unfortunately it currently IS the most effective way to protect your child from measles. Not sure what your gripe is to be honest. Masses of research worldwide proves it again and again. Sorry but think the ASA will read your letter and laugh.

BTW I am NOT going into debate about MMR vs singles etc - just not an argument anyone can win here.

mablemurple · 10/01/2010 11:34

perhaps explain here what else you can do to prevent measles?

JollyPirate · 10/01/2010 11:37

Singles CAN be given but research is now showing that the immune response is better when it's given in a combined vaccine with mumps and rubella. The immune system peaks at about 10 days after the MMR for measles component.

Each to their own here though - for some singles are the right route for others MMR. Be aware though that it's currently proving next to impossible to get the mumps component as a single jab. Mumps is usually mild though (but not always).

mablemurple · 10/01/2010 11:38

oh, ok, I thought it might be something else rather than single jab vs mmr.

and pmsl at the availability of "unbiased" information of any kind.

Am off to hide this thread as it could descend into a nightmare of "only on MN" proportions
