Sorry a bit yeuch!
DH cut his hand on a knife in the dishwasher today, it's quite deep, still seeping blood onto the plaster, but there's 2 small white lumps sticking out so the wound doesn't close around them. ANy ideas what they could be/what we should do?

I reckon he needs stitches but he's not keen..

Bone

Get ye to A&E.

Could it be fat layer? Niece cut her hand badly a few weeks ago and both her parents are dr's and said it was fat layer i think.

She had to have it stitched.

Snufflebufty · 09/01/2010 22:21

IME the white lumps are fatty tissue which normally means the cut is quite deep. I only know this cos I cut my hand years ago by stabbing it with a v sharp knife while trying to cut through frozen burgers (used to work in hotel kitchen). This is what happened with my cut, doctor poked all the gubbins back in and put on steri strips, took ages to heal as it was the palm of my hand.

hth

norksinmywaistband · 09/01/2010 22:21

Whereabouts on his hand
If it is the palm it could be fatty tissue, if the fingers may be tendons
How long has it been seeping? is the gash wide?
If the wound is not closing he should be seen by a medic, walk in centre or A&E, as infection may become an issue

LauraIngallsWilder · 09/01/2010 22:22

It sounds like bone to me as well

Are the white bits located where his bones should be? - I hope that makes sense

I agree that he ought to go to A&E - even though that might be difficult due to snow and he obviously cant drive himself there!

Heated · 09/01/2010 22:23

Fat, muscle or knuckle, depending on where it is? Yes, he does need treatment but if he leaves it any longer there's the chance they won't be able to stitch it and it will be unsightly & permanent. Also chances of infection. He needs to go to A&E tonight.

LauraIngallsWilder · 09/01/2010 22:23

Or fatty tissue I am not a scientist!

It definately needs attention anyway

BitOfFun · 09/01/2010 22:23

DP reckons fat too- says you get fat bubbles and can't close the wound. He hasn't had stitches and says he'd be a sissy to. But I would advise A&E

whomovedmychocolate · 09/01/2010 22:25

Elevate it, keep it clean and dry, get to A&E. If the wound is quite deep it may need opening up to stitch it correctly. It's rarely a 'plaster' job if you go down more than 3mm IIRC.

truoddsox · 09/01/2010 22:30

Yeah looks like it could be fat, it's on the fleshy bit of his palm under his thumb, so def not bone, but I suppose it could be muscle.
Ringing NHS direct now then off to a+e.
Thanks everyone!

Well thankfully no trip out to a+e in the snow (phew), nurse from nhs direct reckons it's just damaged skin, and looking at it closely after wiping the blood away that is what it looks like. she said to kep it covered until monday and if it's not healing to go to the surgery and have the practice nurse put steri strips on and dress it for him. so dh is coz he doesn't have to have stitchesm and i'm coz i don't have to drive in the snow/drag ds out of bed to his grans to sleep. (obviously tho i would if i'd had to

i'm not sure they do stitches as such now do they?, when dh cut his forehead they glued it at a&e. i have quite a few scars from the old style, hand sewn traditional stitches!

I have a deep cut also I’m unsure if I’d need stitches I have the skin at the top but I see white fatty stuff in the cut but the accident happened 2 days ago people were telling me not to seek help that it’s just a cut
