You do have to drink quite a bit, but then on the other hand a lot of people who drink quite a bit don't really realise they drink quite a bit, iyswim - they tend to associate with others who drink the same amount as they do and their points of reference shift a bit.
Also, "bad withdrawals" is a spectrum, obviously - delirium tremens is much worse than the shakes, for example, but I would say they are both "bad withdrawal". Not many people get the DTs - surprisingly many will rpobably get mild shakes.
In spite of all this, withdrawals of the sort you seem to be describing is more common in - how can I put this nicely? - chronic heavy drinkers than acute heavy drinkers. I wouldn't necessarily expect this sort of symptoms if he had over-indulged over Xmas but was otherwise a model of sober moderation.
