period so painful I vomited, but lighter than normal

does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I have booked a doctors appointment for next week, but really wondering what on earth is going on.

my periods are normally fairly heavy and fairly painful, regular 34 day cycle. ttc at present, for a year now, unsuccesfully . This month I ovulated a few days early (judging by ewcm, haven't managed temping), and period duly arrived a few days early, but it was intensely painful, so painful I vomited quite a few times the first day. the second day the pain had gone, I just felt queasy still. It has also been lighter than normal, although not so light as to make me think it is implantation spotting, still definitely a 'period'. My previous period was also lighter than normal

I'm totally baffled, and just wondered if anyone had any light they could shed on this, other things for me to think about so I can make sure I give the gp all relevant information

I'd take a pregnancy test just to rule it out. The GP will want to do this if you are ttc and have an unusual period. It may just be a funny cycle, but you never know...

good luck with the ttc - I know how tough it can be

Hi sorry i have no advice but i'm having a similar period,my periods are usually very heavy (so heavy i can't go out of the house for a couple days) and this month its been very light and keeps stopping and starting. I am not TTC so its very unlikely that i am PG.

I really would recommend you take a pregnancy test. I would hate to scare you but this sounds EXACTLY what I had when I had an ectopic pregnancy 5 years ago. We had been TTC for 3 months when I had a strange period that wasn't like normal in that it was lighter and more watery IYKWIM but the pains were so bad that I couldn't even stand up straight. I thought I couldn't possibly be pregnant as I'd had a period. Little did I know! This went on and off for a few days until my mum came for a planned visit, took one look at me walking around bent at the waist and packed DH off to the supermarket for a pregnancy test. Needless to say it was positive. I got an emergency Dr's appointment and had surgery the day after. I was 7 weeks pregnant and had no idea. I hate to think what could have happened if my mum hadn't have visited. Please do a test and let us know the result!

thanks, just read these, lost internet access! didn't think of ectopic. pains were excruciating for a day, and I vomited that day. Pain was still bad the next day but has gone now, although I stil feel nauseous (might be the dodgy chinese I had at friend's house last night though!). at the time though, it was excruciatingly painful, really scary.

had assumed it was too heavy for me to possibly be pregnant, as it seemed far heavier than I would imagine implantation spotting would be (never been pg) but I guess I should rule out ectopic. with ectopic would the pain go away and come back though? hmmm guess I should internet search.

can't get to a shop for a day or two, although will go earlier if pain comes back. would welcome any other advice, especially for Marne too.

you cannot, cannot, cannot second-guess an ectopic pregnancy, so if i were you i would ring a pal and get someone to get you a test asap.
it's perfectly possible for the pain to go away, it's not a constant thing, an ectopic is a pregnancy that is developing oddly by definition. sorry if i sound bolshy but you shouldn't be relaxed about this, there might be heaps of benign explanations, but you are taking a big risk by not ruling out a pregnancy. (and tbh even if it's a neg test i'd wait a few days and do another).

tiredfeet · 31/12/2009 00:18

no, thats fair to be bolshy Aitch, sometimes people need to be I guess! sorry if I sounded over relaxed. Will try and get a test tomorrow, you're right that it would be stupid to not test and take action promptly if necessary.

I had weird pains after sex about 9 months ago, differnet that time, really sharp, not like period pains. And was really worried it might be an ectopic but everyone at nhs direct, doctors etc, made me feel like I was little silly for worrying that time, and I guess that has made me over-relaxed this time round. I still wonder whether they shouldn't have taken me more seriously that time though (late period, weird bits of spotting, ttc and in acute pain!).

doctors in general know fuck all about ectopics, it sounds like you were lucky before iykwim? it really could be nothing, but you cannot take the risk. we've sent people to er on here and they've all but bled out in the waiting room.

tiredfeet · 31/12/2009 00:32

I agree, I was really shocked I wasn't taken more seriously last time. but I guess it fed into how I reacted this time, was nervous of going to dr and being treated like I was just being hysterical. But I guess at the end of the day its my problem to take responsibility and be assertive if I'm concerned. really hadn't thought it coudl be an ectopic this time, feel a bit dim now! will test soon
