Delayed or non - union in scaphoid?

Hi. I'm hoping that someone may have some useful experience as I feel like i'm getting nowhere.......

I fell and broke my scaphoid in July this year, and I keep getting conflicting information about how it is healing.

I had a cast on for 8 weeks, then CT scan, which showed that it wasn't healed, so had cast on for another 4 weeks. Xray at that point seemed OK, but wrist was still painful, so consultant ordered another CT scan and mentioned possible ligament damage. Waited 4 weeks for the results of the CT scan, and now I've been told that the bone is still fractured!

Consultant said they'd leave it until Jan, when it would be 6 months since the injury occured, and if still not healed by this point, would need to fix with surgery (bone grafts were mentioned). It's not in a cast at the moment, and is only painful in certain positions or if I try to put weight on it.

So I have another appointment in Jan, and I assume they'll do another scan. I have a skiing holiday booked in Feb and cancelling isn't an option as I have an 8 y/o DS with autism who is very excited and has been having ski lessons in preparation.....

Any words of wisdom??? Please....

hi tipsycat....a friend and i had a bad car crash a few years ago and he broke the scaphoid bone on both wrists with the impact of the two cars. one healed and the other one had no union. The docs left it for a year to see if it would heal, but it didnt.
He was in constant pain, hurt when we skied and he is (was) a racing driver and they absolutely killed him when he did long races.Eventually he couldnt take the constant gnawing pain and decided to have it operated on. They opened it up and tried to staple the fragments back on to the main bone. Being a plane joint,it is often more difficult to heal,so he was told. With the help of the staples it has now eventually healed but the surgery has caused major arthritis. sorry to give bad news.

Thanks Alypaly.

The consultant told me that I'd be likely to end up with arthritus if I didn't have it fixed! Hope they don't leave it for a year though, would like to think they'll do something after 6 months. But, not keen on plaster cast for another 3 months after op though. They didn't mention pinning it though, just went on about horrible sounding bone graft.

Is your gastritis any better? I've recently been diagnosed with hiatus hernia and biliary gastritis and on a course of tablets for a month (including Christmas and New Year) which prevent any alcohol!! But, at least they're doing the job and the truly horrible reflux and heatburn is gone, for now at least.

oooh have they given you metronidazole, amoxicillin and lansoprazole. poor you, what no alcohol. Yes my gastritis pain has gone but stomach still a bit techy. Bowels a bit abnormal too....but feeling tons better. thanks for asking. Just in time for xmas and all xmas food. Have had a mild curry but that upset the old bowels so will have to tread carefully

have they mention gall stones with the biliary gastritis?

tipsycat · 22/12/2009 09:35

Had gall bladder removed in July, just before I broke my wrist, so think that's why I now have bile leaking into stomach! Thanks for your reply.
