Cerezette - What's the story?

My Gp wants me to try it now that I have had Mirena removed, (cos of loads of horrid side effects). Can anyone tell me of their experience of Cerezette, good or bad?

I use it now I am breastfeeding, having previously been on the Microgynon combined pill. My understanding is that it is the only mini-pill that suppresses ovulation whereas the others focus on gunking up your tubes to prevent conception. It's fine, I haven't had any problems with it.

if you had bad side effects on Mirena, I'd be on my guard about Cerazette.

it's a progesten-only pill with even more progesten than the Mirena.

try it, but it didn't work for me.

got all the same horrid side effects as Mirena.

I had lots of spotting and a 2 week cycle with 2 mini-pills - femulen and micronor so tried cerazette. I havent had any problems in the last 2 years and also havent had any periods for most of that time too.

I was on it for years and it was excellent. No periods after first 6 months. But just because it is good for some doesn't mean you will find it the same. Good luck with it

kitkatsforbreakfast · 21/12/2009 10:16

I was on it for a few years. Loved it. Loved the 12 hour window for taking it, unlike many other mini pills. I had no side effects and no periods. The only downside was having to remember to take something everyday.

So, when I knew I didn't want more dc, I stopped Cerazette and had the Mirena coil put in. Was assured by the gp that if I had got on well with cerazette, then the mirena would be a breeze. Well, 12 months down the line I still have loads of irregular bleeding, my skin thinks I'm a teenager again, and I get terrible premenstrual symptoms.

Cerazette uses a different sort of progesterone from the mirena, so you can't assume that if one suits you, the other will too, even though the doses are very low in the mirena.

I had a terrible time with Cerazette - had just had DS1 and don't think it's a coincidence that as soon as I started taking it my milk supply dried up and I developed PND. Would not recommend it personally!

whitetulips · 22/12/2009 15:28

I was on it for a couple of years, put on about half a stone, but otherwise, great, no periods at all, which was fab!

NotaStepfordWife · 22/12/2009 15:43

Yes, like snowtiger I had issues with my milk supply when i started taking it. I stopped taking it immediately and worked really hard to re-establish supply. If you're b'feeding, you might want to be cautious.

I used it for a few years, loved it because I had no periods when I was on it (I have endometriosis so periods are very painful)

but I had mood swings on it, like PMT but worse. In the end DH had the snip so I stopped taking it purely because I hadn't been drug free for periods or endo treatments apart from pregnancy so wanted to see what it felt like

I had break through bleeding on femulen too which was why I was put on Cerezette.

I can't say anything good about cerazette. At All! There are whole threads about it. Be wary, worth a try but you have to know when to give up. You are meant to try for 3 months. I gave it 4. The prospect of no periods was tempting, but sadly my body Hated it (2 week periods, great . And it did my mind and sexlife no good at all!! Am still a stone heavier and I stopped it last Spring.

Makingchanges · 02/01/2010 23:46

I've taken it for the last 4 years. It is the only pill I never had any problems with, had problems for years with others and tried approx 6-7 others before this. No periods, cramps or PMT. But I have read negative things about it so I think its just a case of trying it and seeing how it affects you.

rachw1 · 03/01/2010 14:10

I was on it for a couple of years then discovered it was linked to anxiety. Stopped taking it as an experiment as I was suffering with anxiety that had developed over the same period looking back.

A month later, anxiety symptoms had all but disappeared. Coincidence maybe, but I have read other people reporting the same and had I realised the link earlier I would have tried the experiment sooner!

ShepherdsWashedTheirLocks · 03/01/2010 14:27

Took it after 1st preg with no problems, so took it again after 2nd preg. Had horrendous time: non-stop bleeding, hormones all over the place. Felt much better once I'd stopped taking it.

If you try it and it doesn't suit you, at least you can stop taking it immediately, unlike implants, coil etc.
