I had root canal treatment yesterday, have temp filling in the tooth and am to go back in the new year.
I was expecting pain, I know it's painful but MY GOD it fucking hurts

The whole side of my face is swollen, I can't talk properly, open my mouth to eat properly and am in absolute agony, is that normal?
And what else can I do apart from co-codamol and brufen cos thats not touching the pain.

Oh you poor thing. I would ring the dentist as soon as it opens and try to gargle with salt water.

undertheboredwalk · 18/12/2009 07:16

Thanks Picante, will try the salt water now. and shall ring dentist when they open. Do you think they might give me a script for stronger painkillers?

That's not normal, no.

They will prob want you to go in tbh.

Hope they sort you out...I have to have RCT today, ha ha

Rainbowinthesky · 18/12/2009 07:24

Not normal.

undertheboredwalk · 18/12/2009 07:33

Thanks everyone, kind of relieved to know it's not normal, hopefully means that they can do something!

Will let you know how I get on.

i suspect you need antibiotics, there is probably infection trapped under temp filling, they can drain it and you'll feel much better.

FanjoForTheMankySocks · 18/12/2009 08:02

you'd have to get stronger painkillers from gp though.
Good luck.

undertheboredwalk · 18/12/2009 17:39

Thanks for all the advice this morning, called dentist and went back today. The temp filling is out and am just to survive with it open, also got antibiotics.
Feels much better now my face still pretty swollen but the pain dramatically reduced and hoping the rest follows with the anti-b's.
So fingers crossed I have neither pain nor massive face come christmas!

i'm sure you will be much better by then Glad they could help.

alypaly · 19/12/2009 00:09

its shouldnt be that sore. Unless he has gone through the bottom of the root with the thin drill, when he was drilling it out. My dentist did that to mine and split the root. That was pretty sore and i ended up with anothe abscess and the tooth being removed by a different ,more competent dentist.
i do hope the pain subsides, there is nothing worse than tooth ache( has distant memeory of driving round at 4am trying to find and emergency dentist with suffering from a bad abscess) Put lots of pillows behind you when you go to sleep as it hurts more when you lie down flat

FanjoForTheMankySocks · 19/12/2009 08:51

I don't think it necessarily means he has drilled through the root, just that there was a tiny bit of infection in the tooth which got worse and was trapped under the temp filling, I wouldn't go worrying that the root is split, they would have Xrayed you afterwards to check it I'm sure.....

(not a dentist but work for one)

differentnameforthis · 19/12/2009 09:02

It was probably that you have an abscess on the tooth & it couldn't drain. That would account for the swelling, the pain & also the fact that he has now left it open (no filling) He wants it to drain!

In most cases, the body will create a sinus (normally in the area near the gum on the cheek side) & the abscess will drain that way. But for some reason, your body didn't create a sinus & so wouldn't drain.

It should get much better now, just try to keep it as clean as possible.

FanjoForTheMankySocks · 19/12/2009 09:03

yes, what i was trying to say in my non-dental way

differentnameforthis · 19/12/2009 09:16

...

alypaly · 19/12/2009 09:24

fanjo, my old dentist drilled through the end of mine into the gum and blood came up through the root. He still filled it. didnt tell me. Then i got an abscess. A new dentist took it out and showed me the blood old collection in the bottom of the root. Thankfully he retired and i now have a wonderful dentist.

was your face swollen before the procedure

FanjoForTheMankySocks · 19/12/2009 10:10

yes alypaly, and that happened to me too, but I don't think the OP should worry abotu that just yet, that's all, the abscess under the temp filling is still a more likely explanation at this point and hopefully the antibiotics will fix it.

FanjoForTheMankySocks · 19/12/2009 10:11

at differentname, then realises she shouldn't be showing off her teeth

differentnameforthis · 19/12/2009 12:25

Agree with fanjo, drilling thru the apex (base) of the root does happen, but is rare.

I am sure in this case it is an abscess, the dentist must be fairly sure as he has left it to open drain.

undertheboredwalk · 19/12/2009 12:47

Didn't realise people were still chatting about my teeth
I'm fairly sure it was infection trapped under the temp filling, anti-b's have had an effect already, swelling has come right down and pain almost gone - thank god!
I looked like I had a giant gobstopper in my cheek yesterday was ridiculous. Still a little bit of swelling but you can hardly see it now. Should be all sorted for Christmas I think.
