Mum is 70 and has always been fit and active, rides a bicycle around town etc

She's recently been feeling under the weather, and feeling sick all the time, so she went to the doc's and he's done some tests. Now she's had a letter (arrived on Monday) asking her to come in on Thurs to discuss her results.

What does it mean when they do this? If it's something really serious, they'd want her in quicker, wouldn't they? She came over today and she says she feels ok but she looks a bit jaundiced, not sure if this is because she's not eating a lot?

Am quite worried

I think that monday to thursday is not a long time to wait to see the doctor. You can't second guess what information she'll be given nor how serious or otherwise it will be. Will you go with her to get the results? Whatever the outcome I'll think positive thoughts for you.

GoodKingWhatFreshHellLookedOut · 15/12/2009 12:24

I don't think she wants me to come too - she's very independent and is firmly carrying on as normal and not worrying. I will offer though, thanks for suggesting it.

Am tying myself up in knots worrying about it, it's stupid.

It's not stupid it's what happens when you think a lot of your parents. Nothing you can do will change the results of the tests, they are done and unchangable. Why not take your mum out for lunch or something nice like that?

GoodKingWhatFreshHellLookedOut · 15/12/2009 14:39

I think she's very concerned that we behave as if everything is normal right now - she insisted on having DS1 for the day as she normally does, even after I asked if she was really up to it.

I just hope it turns out to be something fixable, or manageable with medication, or something. Can't bear the thought of anything more serious.

Fihgers crossed whatfresh.

Going through it with my dad atm.

Please try not to worry. It might be easily fixable.

GoodKingWhatFreshHellLookedOut · 15/12/2009 15:20

Thanks Orm - I know there's a million things it could be that aren't too serious, but you can't help worrying, can you?

What's up with your dad?

Loooong story. I've bored MN with it for ages. But basically he had to have a heart bypass and valve replacement. Was v sick but came out of hospital about 10 days ago. The got taken in again yesterday because of a stomach ulcer that was bleeding heavily.

But seems OK now.

GoodKingWhatFreshHellLookedOut · 15/12/2009 20:05

Poor you - and poor dad! My father had a valve replacement about 4 years ago and then contracted endocarditis and was very ill, so I really sympathise. He's fine now, although a little less active, but I think that's mostly age rather than as a direct result, iyswim.

Poor you. I know how you feel. A few months ago my dad had a problem with his throat, got sent to see a specialist about it for more tests. I could see he was really worried about it but it played on my mind so much, I was convinced it was cancer. But he went to the ENT place, they had a look and said it was absolutley fine. Hope it's the same with your mum x

Flightattendant · 17/12/2009 14:16

It might just be her gallbladder is playing up, my mum is having this at the moment - easily fixable and would account for the symptoms x

OrmIrian · 17/12/2009 16:02

I must admit I thought gall bladder too flight. Hope you hear soon.

GoodKingWhatFreshHellLookedOut · 17/12/2009 20:21

Clearly you two are secret GPs! Apparently her blood tests showed too many liver enzymes, and the doc said either gall bladder playing up, or blocked bile duct, or something else. She's going for an ultrasound in the next few days and has had more blood tests in case it's Hepatitis. There's a possibility that it could be a growth in the liver blocking a bile duct, so it could, worse case scenario, be cancer, but we're certainly not there yet.

She sounds chirpy, she says she feels a bit better today and quite positive about it all, so that's good. We are keeping everything crossed.

Great news!

Not a GP but mum had this a few years ago. In the end she had her gall bladder removed.

Flightattendant · 17/12/2009 20:36

Oh that's good.

Mum had ultrasound, they stuck her on lansoprosol as pain relief, then did and MRCP which is basically like an MRI of the liver/GB area.
This would rule out any tumours etc.

Mum's liver function has gone back to normal according to latest tests, just waiting fo result of mrcp now...I am also a bit anxious about it, but hopefully it's just gallstones...sooner they take out the GB the better if so. You don't need it really.

alypaly · 18/12/2009 00:22

if she is jaundiced...that will ake her feel very dick. Is her skin going a yellow tinge?how about the whites of her eyes. I would have to agree...it sounds a bit gall bladderish....having had mine out in june this year
